Growing Mental Health Services in the Rio Grande Valley
With a staggering one in four individuals expected to face mental health challenges in their lifetime, the demand for mental health services has dramatically risen. Tropical Texas Behavioral Health (TTBH) has responded to this urgent need, expanding its workforce by an impressive 650% over the years to provide essential support and resources to the Rio Grande Valley.
Rising Demand for Mental Health Support
According to Terry Crocker, the CEO of TTBH, the organization is set to provide services to over 32,000 individuals this year alone. This increase in patients highlights an ongoing demand for mental health care that has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which saw many struggling with heightened anxiety and depression. However, local health experts, including Crocker, emphasize that the need for mental health resources existed even before the pandemic and has only intensified with continuous population growth in the Valley.
Crocker stated, "As the local population grows, the local demand for mental health resources has grown, and it has always been a struggle to keep up with that demand." Current statistics suggest that approximately 4% to 6% of individuals experience serious mental illnesses, while many others encounter less severe but still challenging mental health issues, such as anxiety.
Increasing Awareness and Infrastructure
Despite acknowledging the ongoing need for improved mental health resources, Crocker expresses optimism about progress made in recent years. The Valley has seen an growth in local infrastructure, with an increase in service providers such as DHR Behavioral, South Texas Behavioral, and Palms Behavioral. This expansion is critical, as the variety and complexity of mental health conditions necessitate a broad range of treatment options.
TTBH’s staffing has expanded from about 200 employees to around 1,500 to address the increasing needs of the community. The facility has also secured funding to enhance resources, allowing them to better accommodate patients seeking assistance.
Serving the Community
Among 38 community behavioral health centers statewide, TTBH ranks as one of the top five largest providers in Texas. Notably, TTBH is one of the leading centers for children’s mental health services in the state, second only to Dallas, which highlights the crucial needs of younger populations in the Valley.
Crocker emphasizes the importance of addressing mental health needs promptly, stating, "We know from scientific research that the earlier we get someone with a serious mental health condition into service, the better chance they have at recovery." Acknowledging the need for support is a vital first step in seeking help.
Cultural Barriers to Treatment
Crocker points out that cultural factors can hinder individuals from seeking mental health care. Many families attempt to handle issues internally rather than consulting healthcare professionals. This often leads to misunderstandings about mental illnesses, influenced by portrayals in media and online resources.
To combat this stigma, comprehensive education on mental health is essential. "It’s very important that people in the Valley are aware of mental health and to help decrease the stigma associated with getting treatment," Crocker explains.
Identifying the Need for Help
Recognizing symptoms that disrupt daily life is crucial in identifying the need for mental health care. Signs may include changes in sleep patterns, eating habits, or unexplained weight loss. TTBH provides a hotline available year-round at (877) 289-7199, allowing individuals to reach out for help at any time.
Support groups are another valuable resource, offering comfort and encouragement for those struggling. Crocker recommends that individuals start by participating in these groups to assess their mental health and understand their next steps toward recovery.
Accessing Services
For individuals seeking treatment, contacting TTBH at (956) 289-7000 begins the process. The organization conducts screenings to determine eligibility for services. TTBH primarily focuses on individuals with more severe diagnoses, such as schizophrenia, but ensures that anyone in need is connected with appropriate resources.
Crocker has dedicated nearly 40 years to mental health advocacy and remains motivated by positive patient outcomes. Receiving letters of appreciation and success stories fuels his commitment to expanding mental health resources in the Valley.
Upcoming Events: Raising Awareness
To further advocate for mental health awareness, TTBH is hosting several events throughout May, including a Children’s Mental Health Awareness Carnival on May 16 from 10 a.m. to noon at their Weslaco location. Additionally, an event observing Mental Health Awareness Month will take place on May 24 from 3 to 5 p.m. at their Harlingen location.
