Hidalgo County to Launch Its First Dental Hygiene Program

Transforming Oral Health Education in South Texas

In an exciting development for Hidalgo County, South Texas College is on the verge of launching its inaugural Dental Hygiene program, spearheaded by Janis Lopez, a dedicated member of their faculty with over two decades of experience in dentistry. Set to commence in fall 2026, this groundbreaking initiative promises to reshape local access to oral health education and offer students a pathway to lucrative careers in the dental field.

Addressing a Dental Education Desert

Lopez aptly describes Hidalgo County as a “dental education desert.” Currently, students must travel over an hour to access dental hygiene education, significantly limiting their opportunities. This program aims to fill that gap, enabling aspiring dental professionals to acquire the necessary skills right in their hometown.

“The demand is here. The jobs are here. We’re building a pathway for those ready to take on a challenging program and earn their education close to home,” Lopez explained.

The Dental Hygiene program not only intends to offer comprehensive training but also aims to encourage graduates to work within their communities, thus addressing local oral health needs.

Program Structure and Accreditation

Lopez is diligently laying the framework for a five-semester program designed to gain full accreditation from the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). This accreditation is crucial, as it ensures that students will graduate equipped with the essential knowledge and skills to thrive in the dental industry, ultimately earning an Associate of Applied Science in Dental Hygiene.

Meeting CODA Standards

"C ODA sets strict standards for everything, from faculty to equipment," Lopez emphasized. Ensuring these benchmarks are met will provide students with top-notch education and training to be fully prepared for licensure in their future careers.

Inspirational Beginnings

Lopez’s journey into dentistry began during her high school years when she underwent extensive orthodontic treatment. Her fascination with dental care began while waiting for her appointments, which allowed her to watch the orthodontic procedures closely.

“My mom had to go to work, so she’d take me out of school and drop me off at the orthodontist until it was time for my appointment. I’d sit in the waiting room for hours, just watching everything they did. That’s when I started getting curious about teeth,” she shared.

After moving to Austin to pursue an education degree, Lopez took a position at the front desk of a dental clinic. This experience reignited her passion for the field, leading her to switch her major and dive deeper into dentistry.

A Comprehensive Career Journey

With extensive hands-on experience, Lopez’s career spans various roles in the dental industry. From front desk management to assisting orthodontists and dentists, she has amassed a wealth of knowledge and expertise that she now brings to her teaching role.

“I realized my heart was in dentistry so I changed my major. Since then, I’ve done it all—from front desk, insurance, and scheduling to assisting dentists,” said Lopez. After graduating as a dental hygienist in 2003, her extensive background continues to contribute to her innovative teaching methods.

The Future of Dental Hygiene in Hidalgo County

The implementation of the Dental Hygiene program at South Texas College marks a transformative step for Hidalgo County. This initiative is expected to not only provide educational opportunities but also play a vital role in improving the overall oral health of the community.

As Hidalgo County prepares for this exciting new chapter, prospective students can look forward to a bright future in a fulfilling, well-compensated profession—all while making a positive impact in their own community.

This initiative represents a significant leap forward for oral health education in the region, creating a lasting legacy in dental care that will benefit the residents of Hidalgo County for years to come.
