Devastating Storm Causes Widespread Damage in Rio Grande City

Residents of Rio Grande City are reeling from a severe storm that struck over the weekend, resulting in extensive damage to homes and vehicles throughout the area. The storm, which featured heavy rainfall, powerful winds, and hail the size of softballs, was one of the most destructive weather events the community has experienced in recent memory.

Impact of the Storm

According to reports from the National Weather Service, the Texas Department of Public Safety documented hail measuring up to softball size in Rio Grande City. The powerful nature of the storm left many residents shocked. Marisa Faw, a local resident, expressed her disbelief, stating, "It’s like a small city, usually when a storm is coming, it just passes by. To see this much damage is just surprising to me."

Faw, along with her family, spent Sunday surveying the destruction surrounding their home. Numerous windows were shattered by the hail and high winds, affecting both their residence and vehicles parked nearby. Faw noted that her neighbors along FM 3167 experienced similar devastation.

Community Response

The tight-knit community in Rio Grande City has come together in the wake of the storm. "Mostly on this side [of the street] we all know each other and we all help each other, whenever stuff comes down to this," Faw remarked. Many residents banded together to protect their properties and evaluate damages caused by the storm.

The National Weather Service is actively assessing the strength of the storm, emphasizing the severity of straight-line winds, often referred to as microbursts. Warning Coordination Meteorologist Barry Goldsmith indicated that wind speeds likely reached between 65 to 70 mph. He remarked that the combination of hail size and wind strength significantly contributes to damage outcomes.

Additional Damage Reports

In another nearby neighborhood, less than half a mile from Faw’s home, the storm caused the roof of a food trailer park to collapse. One of the food trucks parked there suffered damage as a result. Co-owner of Silly Dogs Food Trailer Park, Herbie Lopez, expressed his concern, stating, "For us to call them, to tell them there’s not going to be work tomorrow… it feels terrible, but is nothing like losing somebody." He recounted how winds displaced trailers and uprooted light poles during the storm.

Areas around La Esperanza remained flooded, with homeowners facing significant challenges. The most striking image post-storm depicted a pickup truck crushed beneath the fallen roof of a gas station, now cordoned off with yellow tape to prevent public entry.

City Officials Respond

Rio Grande City officials, including City Manager Gilbert Millan, are actively assessing damage and aiding residents in need. "This information that we collect is also going to help for government evaluation in case there’s a disaster declaration," Millan shared. The city’s response to the storm highlights the widespread impact of the severe weather event, with assessments taking place across varying neighborhoods.

No Casualties Reported

Fortunately, despite the extensive damage and chaos, officials report no fatalities attributed to the storm. Both the National Weather Service and municipal authorities continue to evaluate the aftermath, encouraging affected residents to document their damages. They can report their experiences and file claims via the iSTAT survey.

Conclusion

As the residents of Rio Grande City begin the long recovery process, their resilience remains key. Neighbors are coming together to support each other during this challenging time while officials work to assess and report the extent of the damage. The storm serves as a stark reminder of nature’s power, but the community’s spirit shines through as they band together to heal and rebuild.
