UTRGV Vaqueros Secure Valuable Draw Against Lindseywood Lions
RIO GRANDE VALLEY – In a gripping encounter on Friday, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men’s soccer team held the (RV) Lindenwood Lions to a scoreless draw at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex. This result showcased a commendable team effort from the Vaqueros as they stifled one of the nation’s strongest teams.
First Half: Defense Dominates
The first half saw UTRGV (0-5-1) assert themselves by controlling the tempo of play. Their defensive prowess was evident as they thwarted every attempt from the Lions, denying them any shots on goal. The Vaqueros maintained consistent pressure in the offensive third, orchestrating four shots within roughly 15 minutes. Key players, including junior midfielder Emiliano Abboud, junior forward Mouhamed Pouye, and redshirt sophomore Malang Mandiang, were instrumental in facilitating ball movement and creating scoring opportunities.
As the first half drew to a close, the Lions (7-0-1) intensified their offensive efforts, attempting to break the deadlock with several shots, yet UTRGV’s defensive line held firm. The halftime statistics showed an even contest with both teams registering two corners.
Second Half: Intensity Ramps Up
Emerging from the locker room, Lindenwood came out aggressively, firing three quick shots, two of which were on target. However, UTRGV’s senior goalkeeper Alexis Gonzalez showcased remarkable composure, making critical saves in the 48th and 49th minutes. The match’s heated atmosphere led to a temporary pause as a physical skirmish among players resulted in three yellow cards.
Despite the turbulent middle phase of the second half, both teams continued to press forward. The Vaqueros intensified their offensive surge, unleashing five shots within just five minutes late in the game. Contributions from Pouye, Mandiang, and freshman forward Michael Chaves kept the pressure on Lindenwood’s defense. Notably, in the 86th minute, freshman midfielder Dylan Hernandez had a shot blocked, underscoring the match’s defensive intensity.
Late Drama: A Red Card and Final Push
As the clock wound down to 1:30 remaining, UTRGV was dealt a red card, leaving them a player short. Lindenwood was awarded a penalty kick, but it soared over the net, much to the relief and joy of the Vaqueros’ supporters. Despite being down a man, the Vaqueros mounted a final counterattack; Chaves managed to take a shot on goal with a mere 20 seconds remaining, but Lindenwood’s goalkeeper, Quinn Closson, made his sixth save to preserve the stalemate.
Chaves and Mandiang each finished the match with three shots, while Gonzalez recorded two crucial saves throughout the contest.
