Major Immigration Enforcement Operation in Rio Grande Valley: 78 Arrested

Overview of Operation Pick-Off

In a significant law enforcement effort, Operation Pick-Off has culminated in the arrest of 78 individuals in the Rio Grande Valley for immigration-related violations. Announced by U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei, this operation predominantly focused on criminal activities in Cameron, Willacy, Hidalgo, and Starr counties.

Timeline and Key Details of the Operation

Commencing on August 22, the operation spanned over the weekend, unifying the efforts of multiple agencies aimed at combating immigration issues alongside violent crime. According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the operation particularly targeted individuals illegally residing in the U.S. who were also on probation for various state offenses.

Criminal Background of Arrested Individuals

Of the individuals apprehended, 65 were reported to be living in the U.S. illegally after prior removal, many of whom were serving probation for serious crimes including:

  • Drug offenses
  • Human smuggling
  • Fraud
  • Burglary
  • Assault

If convicted, these individuals could face up to 20 years in federal prison.

Additional Arrests and Immediate Removals

In addition to the primary arrests, two individuals were detained on misdemeanor warrants for evading examination or inspection by immigration officials while being on state probation. A further eleven individuals were identified for immigration violations and are anticipated to be deported promptly.

Collaboration Among Law Enforcement Agencies

The operation benefited immensely from the FBI’s Summer Heat initiative, which emphasized collaborative efforts among various law enforcement entities to tackle priority criminal targets. Special Agent in Charge Aaron Tapp of the FBI’s San Antonio Field Office highlighted the complexity of current threats, stating, "Today’s threats are too complex, too dangerous, and too widespread for any one agency to handle alone." He described Operation Pick-Off as a prime example of what can be achieved through unity.

Key Agencies Involved

The execution of Operation Pick-Off was a joint initiative among several major law enforcement agencies, including:

  • FBI
  • Border Patrol
  • U.S. Attorney’s Office
  • Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) – Homeland Security Investigations
  • U.S. Marshals Service
  • ICE – Enforcement and Removal Operations
  • Drug Enforcement Administration
  • Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives
  • Texas Department of Public Safety
  • IRS Criminal Investigation

This collaboration underscores the commitment of local and federal agencies to work together in addressing complex immigration-related issues and violent crime in the region.

Conclusion

Operation Pick-Off stands as a decisive action in the battle against illegal immigration and associated criminal activities in the Rio Grande Valley. Through the joint efforts of multiple law enforcement agencies, this initiative not only aims to uphold national security but also to reassure communities of their safety. As such operations continue, the focus remains on maintaining safety and order while addressing the intricate challenges posed by illegal immigration.
