Joel Villanueva Returns to KRGV 5 as Morning Anchor

On September 22, 2025, KRGV 5 Rio Grande Valley will welcome back former Sports Director Joel Villanueva as their new morning anchor. This exciting transition marks a significant milestone in Villanueva’s career, bringing seasoned experience back to a familiar setting.

A Journey at KRGV 5

Joel Villanueva has had a remarkable trajectory at KRGV, which traces back over a decade. He commenced his journey in 2009 as a video editor, gradually climbing through the ranks. In 2008, he took on the role of weekend sports anchor, demonstrating his talent and commitment to excellence. By 2014, Villanueva was appointed as the sports director, solidifying his status as a prominent figure in Rio Grande Valley sports journalism.

Transition Outside Broadcasting

In 2020, Villanueva made the decision to step away from broadcasting to explore new opportunities. He took on the role of communications manager at Atlantis Casino Resort Spa in Reno, Nevada, where he honed his communication skills beyond the sports realm. His diverse experience in media and communications will undoubtedly enrich his upcoming role at KRGV.

Academic Endeavors

A proud graduate of the University of North Texas, Villanueva is currently expanding his academic credentials. He is completing a Master of Arts in Strategic Communication & Innovation at Texas Tech University. This advanced education equips him with cutting-edge skills that will enhance his journalistic capabilities and benefit KRGV’s audience.

New Roles at KRGV 5

In a related shift, morning anchor Javier Guerra is transitioning to the evening newscasts at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. This rearrangement aligns with the station’s goal to provide consistent and engaging news coverage throughout the day. Guerra’s experience as a morning anchor will surely complement the evening broadcasts.

Community Impact

The return of Joel Villanueva not only revitalizes KRGV’s morning segment but also strengthens the connection between the station and its viewers. His familiarity with the community, coupled with his rich background in sports and communication, positions him uniquely to address the interests and concerns of the Rio Grande Valley audience.

Conclusion

As Joel Villanueva steps back into the KRGV 5 spotlight, viewers can look forward to a blend of seasoned experience and innovative communication strategies in their morning news. His return signifies a promising shift for the station and an opportunity for the community to engage with a familiar face committed to delivering quality journalism.
