Tragedy Strikes: Crans-Montana New Year’s Eve Fire Claims 40 Lives

A devastating fire that engulfed a bar in Crans-Montana, a well-known ski resort in Switzerland, resulted in the tragic deaths of 40 people during a New Year’s Eve celebration. Authorities confirmed that a total of 116 individuals suffered injuries, though initial reports had listed 119, later corrected as three victims were misclassified. The incident is under investigation, with particular scrutiny on the circumstances leading to the fire.

The Incident at Le Constellation Bar

The fire broke out in the crowded Le Constellation bar, located in the heart of Crans-Montana, shortly after midnight. Investigators believe that the blaze was ignited when sparklers attached to champagne bottles were held too close to a soundproofing foam-clad ceiling, leading to a rapid escalation of flames. This mishap turned a joyful celebration into a scene of chaos and horror.

According to police in Valais canton, the victims predominantly consisted of young adults, with a substantial number under the age of 20. Among the deceased, 21 were Swiss nationals, 9 French citizens (including two with dual nationality), 6 Italians, and individuals from Belgium, Portugal, Romania, and Turkey.

Casualties and Repatriation

The bodies of the first foreign victims have been repatriated. Five of the six Italian victims were transported via military aircraft from Sion airport to Milan, where families awaited their arrival. The six victim, Sofia Prosperi, who lived in Switzerland, will be buried locally. Many of the injured remain hospitalized, with 83 individuals receiving treatment for severe burns.

List of Nationalities Affected

  • 68 Swiss citizens
  • 21 French nationals
  • 10 Italians
  • 4 Serbs
  • 4 individuals with dual nationality
  • 2 Poles
  • 1 person each from seven other countries

Investigative Developments

Authorities are currently investigating the owners of the bar, Jacques and Jessica Moretti, on charges that may include homicide by negligence. Despite the ongoing investigation, the couple has not been arrested, as they are not deemed a flight risk. This has led to public outcry, with some media outlets questioning why they remain free amidst the tragedy.

The Italian government has expressed a commitment to following the investigation closely. Ambassador Gian Lorenzo Cornado stated, “We will do everything possible to ensure the truth is revealed quickly, and justice is served.”

Questions Raised

As the investigation unfolds, several critical questions are being raised regarding safety protocols at the bar:

  • Was there adequate age verification for patrons?
  • Were the safety standards concerning the soundproofing material and the sparklers followed?
  • Were previous safety inspections conducted thoroughly?

Jacques Moretti defended the bar, insisting that it had been inspected three times over the last decade, stating that all operations complied with local regulations.

Memorials and Community Response

In response to this tragic loss, Crans-Montana plans to hold a memorial ceremony honoring the victims. The French government announced that President Emmanuel Macron would attend to pay respects.

Seeking Justice and Accountability

As the town grapples with the aftermath of this tragedy, the community continues to call for transparency and accountability. Investigators have received documents related to the bar’s operations in hopes of clarifying the events leading to this heartbreaking incident.

A Final Words

This calamity has profoundly impacted multiple families and communities, igniting a dialogue on safety standards in public venues, especially during events involving large crowds. The promise of justice hangs heavily as the investigation continues, and those affected seek solace in shared grief.
