UTRGV Golf Classic Raises Over $45,000 for Athletics
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) hosted its 3rd Annual Golf Classic, presented by D. Wilson Construction, on Monday at the scenic Champion Lakes Golf Course. This exciting event successfully raised a remarkable $45,925, benefiting the university’s men’s and women’s golf teams.
A Competitive Day of Golf
The UTRGV Golf Classic brought together 128 participants who formed 32 teams to compete in a thrilling 4-person scramble format. Among the competitors, Team Uriegas Dentistry emerged victorious. Comprising Dr. Melissa Uriegas, Alberto Uriegas, Alberto Uriegas Jr., and Andrew Cabrerra, they clinched the first-place title and earned a trip to the much-anticipated Dallas Cowboys vs. Los Angeles Chargers game on December 21, courtesy of RGV Tours.
Coming in second place was the team from D. Wilson Construction, which featured Ernie Garza, Papito Gonzalez, Eulogio Medrano, and Hans Zlomek. Their noteworthy performance awarded them the use of a suite at a Vaqueros baseball game, generously donated by South Texas Commercial.
Securing third place was the team from South Texas Commercial, including Pablo Bocanegra, Ruben Chavez, David Oliviera, and Lalo Villarreal. This team won a golf package that includes four rounds at Brackenridge Park Golf Course, four hours at Killers Golf, a set of custom Titleist golf balls, and personalized UTRGV driver or putter covers.
Community and Support
UTRGV Athletics expressed heartfelt gratitude to all participants and sponsors who made the event possible. The UTRGV Director of Golf, Houston Moore, emphasized how the event illustrates the strength of community ties and the family spirit present within the university’s golf programs.
“This support not only enhances our programs but also equips us with essential tools for continuous development within the Southland Conference (SLC) and NCAA,” Moore stated.
Special Activities and Amenities
Participants enjoyed a delightful chicken fajita lunch grilled on-site by G3 Scrap Metal. The culinary experience was complemented by hospitality services provided by L&F Distributors. Exciting competitions for the closest to the pin and longest drive were made more enticing with Wing Barn gift cards, while a hole-in-one competition was sponsored by Golf Cart Crossing.
Adding to the fun, UTRGV student-athletes actively participated in the event, allowing teams to purchase drives hit by members of the men’s and women’s golf teams, further engaging participants in the day’s activities.
