Flood Warning Issued for the Rio Grande at Laredo: Essential Information for Residents

Laredo, Tex. – A flood warning has been issued by the National Weather Service for the Rio Grande at Laredo, prompting residents to stay vigilant. The warning, set to be effective from Wednesday morning, July 16, until Thursday evening, July 17, comes as heavy rainfall upstream near Eagle Pass is expected to cause river levels to rise significantly.

Current River Levels and Forecast

As of the latest updates, the river level near International Bridge 2 is reported at approximately 2 feet. However, forecasts predict that this level could escalate to over 10 feet by Wednesday afternoon. Minor flooding is categorized as levels exceeding 8 feet, which might impact areas such as the U.S. Customs and Border Protection parking lot.

Colombia-Solidarity Bridge Projections

Water levels at the Colombia-Solidarity Bridge are also expected to approach critical stages, with levels potentially reaching 16 feet (Action Stage) and 18 feet, which is associated with minor flooding. The situation remains dynamic, and monitoring is essential as conditions are subject to change.

Emergency Preparedness and Response

The City of Laredo has activated its Emergency Operations Center. Local authorities are collaborating with Webb County, Rio Bravo, and Nuevo Laredo partners to closely monitor the situation and prepare for any potential impacts associated with rising river levels.

Leadership Advice

Mayor Dr. Victor D. Treviño has advised residents to remain alert and prepared, emphasizing that conditions can change rapidly based on rainfall upstream. “It’s natural to be worried when we get an alert,” he stated. Hernan Martinez from the Laredo Fire Department reassured the public that while a modest rise in the Rio Grande is anticipated, there will not be severe storms or flooding in Laredo itself.

Safety Recommendations

Residents are urged to exercise caution near riverbanks and refrain from navigating flooded roads. Adhering to safety recommendations such as “turn around, don’t drown” is crucial, as flood-related incidents often occur in vehicles.

Monitoring River Conditions

For those interested in monitoring river conditions, visit the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for real-time updates.

Conclusion

Residents of Laredo should stay informed and prepared as the National Weather Service has highlighted the potential for minor flooding along the Rio Grande over the coming days. Being aware of the situation and taking precautions can mitigate risks associated with rising water levels.

For further insights and updates, you can access additional information through the National Weather Service, which offers the latest forecasts and safety tips.

Stay safe and vigilant!
