Intense thunderstorms swept through the Rio Grande Valley, resulting in severe flash floods across several counties in Texas between late Thursday and Friday. Authorities are urging residents to steer clear of low-lying areas as torrential rains continue to saturate the landscape.
Widespread Water Rescues and Emergencies
As heavy rainfall persisted throughout southeastern Texas, fire officials in Alamo, Hidalgo County, reported conducting over 50 water rescues on Thursday. Alamo Fire Chief RC Flores explained that a rescue crew faced difficulties reaching a pregnant woman in labor near a Walmart due to the swollen floodwaters. Fortunately, a specialized fire truck was eventually able to reach her.
The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the thunderstorm’s aftermath was creating significant challenges, with forecasts indicating heavy rain would continue into Friday.
Neighboring Cameron County experienced similar predicaments, with officials alerting residents to seek higher ground amidst life-threatening flood conditions. Flash flood warnings have been issued in both counties due to ongoing severe thunderstorms, emphasizing the need for caution.

Hospital Flooding and Infrastructure Impacts
In Hidalgo County, the South Texas Health System hospital in McAllen reported minor flooding on its first floor due to stormwater drainage issues. A viral video showed powerful water surging through the facility, reaching ankle height in some corridors.
In response to the flooding, the hospital temporarily diverted walk-in and ambulance patients to nearby facilities while pausing visitation hours. As cleanup efforts progressed, the hospital managed to reopen its Level 1 Trauma Center for stroke and trauma patients, although non-emergency patients continued to be redirected to other hospitals. Normal visitation hours are expected to resume on Friday.
Educational Institutions Take Precautions
Due to the severe weather, numerous schools in the affected counties announced temporary closures. This included all campuses of South Texas ISD, South Texas College, University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, IDEA Public Schools, Triumph Public High Schools, and the Brownsville Independent School District.
