Ongoing Cyberattack Disrupts DHR Health Systems

DHR Health is currently grappling with the repercussions of a cyberattack that has crippled their information systems. Despite the ongoing technical challenges, the clinics and hospitals remain operational, ensuring continued access to healthcare services for patients.

Impact on Patient Appointments

Channel 5 News has received numerous inquiries from both employees and patients regarding the incident. As per DHR Health’s latest statement, no scheduled medical procedures have been canceled, except for those specifically in the Cath lab. However, some patients have reported being turned away during their appointments, leading to understandable frustration.

Luis, a San Antonio resident who traveled to the Rio Grande Valley on Thursday to assist his mother with a cardiology appointment, expressed his concerns. "Without any notification, prior to the day before or even the day of, we walk in and they’re like, ‘oh, our systems are down,’" he stated. This lack of communication is particularly troubling for those depending on timely medical care.

Operational Challenges for Staff

The cyberattack’s fallout has also affected DHR Health’s staff. Employees are struggling to access essential tools like their computers and email. Sources within the organization indicated that many personnel are reverting to paper documentation for patient records, a process that could lead to inefficiencies and further delays.

According to DHR Health, "no employee was asked to take vacation or unpaid leave," ensuring that staff are available to assist patients during this challenging time.

Understanding Cybersecurity Threats

Cybersecurity expert Alex Alcoser from Texas State Technical College provided insights into the nature of such incidents. "A cyber incident can vary in its scope and impact. It could range from ransomware, which locks down systems, to data breaches that compromise personal information," Alcoser said. He noted that organizations usually have contingency plans to mitigate these crises, often involving isolating the affected systems and restoring operations as quickly as possible.

Continued Commitment to Patient Care

Despite the challenges brought by the cyberattack, DHR Health is dedicated to restoring their systems and improving communication with affected patients. While there is currently no timeline available for when the situation will be resolved, the organization is actively working to resolve the issues as swiftly as possible.

For individuals seeking updates or wishing to contact DHR Health or any of their medical clinics, call 956-362-8677 for assistance.

With healthcare operations still ongoing, DHR Health remains steadfast in prioritizing patient care and transparency during this challenging time. Continued updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
