Man Who Escaped Federal Prison in 1997 Arrested in McAllen Hospital

A significant development has occurred regarding a 26-year-old escape case involving Primitivo Doria, a man who evaded authorities after escaping federal prison in 1997. Doria, now 75, was arrested this past Wednesday at the Rio Grande Regional Hospital in McAllen, Texas.

Escape from Fort Bliss

On August 6, 1997, Doria escaped while participating in a work detail at a laundry facility at Fort Bliss in El Paso. It was at approximately 10:20 a.m. that a routine count revealed his absence. According to the arrest warrant, officials conducted a thorough search of the institution as well as the surrounding area, ultimately confirming that Doria was indeed no longer present.

The implications of such an escape are serious, particularly from federal facilities, which are typically designed to prevent such incidents. The warrant stated, “During the count the Defendant was found to be missing, and the Defendant was officially declared an escaped federal prisoner.”

Background on Primitivo Doria

At the time of his escape, Doria was serving a 12 ½-year sentence for serious drug-related charges, including conspiracy to possess and possess with the intent to distribute marijuana. He was one of more than a dozen suspects indicted in a significant drug trafficking case in Georgia. While the specifics of the charges remain somewhat obscured due to the age of the case, Doria’s lengthy prison sentence underscores the gravity of his original crimes.

Legal Proceedings

Since his capture, Doria has been taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service and is currently being held without bond. He is scheduled for a first appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Nadia S. Medrano in McAllen federal court on October 14. This will mark the first legal interaction for Doria since his escape, potentially leading to further repercussions for his nearly 26-year evasion of law enforcement.

The Impact of Long-Term Escapes

Doria’s case sheds light on the challenges of managing inmates on work details, especially in facilities like Fort Bliss. It’s crucial for federal institutions to maintain strict security protocols to prevent escapes from becoming a long-term issue. The instance of Doria’s evasion raises questions about the effectiveness of oversight in these programs.

Conclusion

Primitivo Doria’s arrest serves as a reminder of the complexities involved in the federal penitentiary system and the impact of long-term escapes. It also emphasizes the significant efforts taken by authorities in capturing fugitives, even decades after their initial crimes. As this case unfolds in McAllen federal court, it remains to be seen what consequences await Doria for his prolonged absence from justice.
