Grand Opening of Driscoll Children’s Hospital Rio Grande Valley

On August 17th, 2024, the McAllen-Edinburg community came together to celebrate a significant milestone in pediatric healthcare—the opening of Driscoll Children’s Hospital Rio Grande Valley. This new facility marks the first freestanding, designated children’s hospital in the region, setting a new standard for pediatric care.

A Day of Celebration

The ribbon-cutting ceremony attracted numerous residents and families, who participated in various community activities designed to engage and entertain. The joyous atmosphere highlighted the community’s collective excitement and support for this transformative addition to local healthcare services.

Community Impact: Transforming Pediatric Healthcare

Eric Hamon, President and CEO of Driscoll Health System, emphasized the importance of the hospital’s opening, stating, "This is just the beginning…God bless you and God bless the children we take care of." His message resonated with attendees, who understood the profound implications this facility will have on the health and well-being of children in the Valley.

Insights from Leadership

Matt Wolthoff, President of Driscoll Children’s Hospital Rio Grande Valley, shared insights during the event, underscoring the buzzing success of the hospital within just three months of operation. "Believe it or not, in three months of operations we’re already talking about capacity: how do we grow, how do we make more room?” he stated.

Features and Services

Driscoll Children’s Hospital boasts impressive facilities, designed to cater specifically to the pediatric population:

  • 119 pediatric beds, including 63 NICU beds
  • Eight surgery suite operating rooms
  • 175,000 square feet of cutting-edge construction
  • More than 30 pediatric medical and surgical specialties
  • Acute care services available 24/7

This extensive range of services is aimed at improving the quality of healthcare provided to children in the region.

Acknowledgments and Awards

Texas State Senator Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa delighted attendees with his presence and remarks. He was honored with the “Children’s Health Care Hero Award” by the Children’s Hospital Association of Texas for his advocacy in improving children’s healthcare. Hinojosa expressed his gratitude, saying, "I thank all our healthcare providers who work in children’s hospitals. They have the experience, the knowledge, tienen corazón— they have heart, to work with children."

Stacy E. Wilson, President of the Children’s Hospital Association of Texas, also joined the celebration, highlighting the collaborative efforts necessary for achieving improved healthcare outcomes. She emphasized the significance of ensuring mothers have access to preventative care and mental health services, stating, "We know that you can’t have a healthy kid without a healthy mom."
