UTRGV Athletics: Chasse Conque’s Vision and Leadership
Contract Extension and Promotion
RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) has officially announced a contract extension for Chasse Conque, who has been elevated to the position of Senior Vice President and Director of Athletics. This extension will keep him at the helm through 2031, marking a period of unprecedented development and transformation within UTRGV Athletics.
“Chasse Conque’s leadership in athletics has been nothing short of transformative," stated UTRGV President Guy Bailey. His dedication to enhancing student-athlete success—both competitively and academically—exemplifies the university’s mission, bolstered by remarkable fundraising and attendance milestones. This focus has positioned UTRGV Athletics as a cornerstone of community involvement and support throughout the Valley.
Transformative Leadership and Growth
In just six years since joining UTRGV, Conque has spearheaded significant advancements in university athletics, earning recognition as the 2024 Edinburg Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year. Under his leadership, UTRGV has seen attendance soar across all sports to over 140,000 this year alone, alongside an impressive $30 million in externally generated revenue over the past two years. Notably, UTRGV baseball has gained acclaim by ranking 34th in NCAA attendance, attracting a record-breaking 82,258 fans.
This remarkable support has ushered in new programs, including football and women’s swimming & diving, alongside a transition to the Southland Conference as full-time members. This strategic move emphasizes regional collaboration and prioritizes enriching the student-athlete experience, evidenced by the Vaqueros winning team and individual championships in various sports.
Major Facility Enhancements
Currently, Conque is overseeing an ambitious $180 million in athletics facility upgrades, funded through revenues from UTRGV Athletics. These enhancements will touch all 18 athletic programs and include key projects such as the Vaqueros Performance Center, a state-of-the-art facility set to open in late July, and the Robert & Janet Vackar Stadium, which is anticipated to host UTRGV’s inaugural football game on August 30.
Rallying Community Support
In his inaugural press conference in August 2019, Conque envisioned a movement titled “Rally the Valley.” This initiative has resonated deeply with both athletics and the broader UTRGV community, encouraging a unified effort to support regional growth and student engagement.
Community service has become a hallmark of this mission, with UTRGV ranking sixth nationally in community service hours for the 2023-24 academic year. This commitment to community involvement underscores the university’s dedication to enriching the lives of those in the Rio Grande Valley.
Academic Excellence Among Student-Athletes
Athletic success is accompanied by academic achievements for UTRGV student-athletes, who currently boast a record cumulative GPA of 3.35 and an academic progress rate of 993. This dual emphasis on athletics and academics contributes to the holistic development of each student-athlete at UTRGV.
Additionally, initiatives led by Conque have expanded the visibility of UTRGV athletics. From apparel to partnerships with local businesses, the increased presence of the Vaqueros in stores, banks, and restaurants across the Valley enhances community connection and support.
Looking Towards the Future
Reflecting on his time in the Valley, Conque expressed deep gratitude for the community: “We have been blessed with continuity on many fronts, and I am grateful for our coaches, student-athletes, and staff that all share a passion for UTRGV Athletics. With such unprecedented support from the Valley, I am confident that the best days are still ahead for the Vaqueros.”
As UTRGV continues to grow and innovate, the future looks bright under Conque’s leadership. The commitment to excellence in athletics and academics remains a guiding principle for the university, ensuring that UTRGV stands as a beacon of opportunity and achievement within the region.
