Celebrating a Volleyball Legend: Coach Diana Lerma at the RGV Sports Hall of Fame

This weekend, the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) will honor one of its most notable sports figures, Coach Diana Lerma, as she is inducted into the RGV Sports Hall of Fame. Hailing from Mission, Texas, Coach Lerma’s journey in the world of volleyball has left an indelible mark on the local sports community.

Early Beginnings and Path to Coaching

Coach Diana Lerma began her career as an assistant coach at La Joya, where she teamed up with her sister to build a foundation in athletic coaching. Reflecting on her induction, Lerma expressed her excitement: "Oh, I was very excited. This is being amongst people I respect and admire. It’s an honor to be selected as one of them."

In 2002, she took the reins as the head volleyball coach at Mission Veterans High School. From that moment on, her coaching trajectory skyrocketed, challenging the status quo. "When I got the job, they said it would take three years for me to develop a program, and that’s not what happened. The girls exploded, and we won seven district titles back to back!"

Record-Breaking Achievements

Under Coach Lerma’s guidance, Mission Veterans has become a powerhouse in Texas volleyball. With over 800 career victories, her teams have secured an impressive 18 district titles and made four appearances in the coveted Sweet 16 tournaments. Remarkably, in her 23 seasons as head coach, her teams have never missed the playoffs—a staggering achievement reflecting her commitment to excellence.

"Some of my highlights include when we were ranked number one in the nation," Lerma noted. "It’s an honor and a privilege for these kids to understand what it takes to master or appreciate the sport of volleyball."

Coach Lerma’s influence extends beyond mere statistics on a scoreboard. She has been instrumental in mentoring young athletes, instilling values of hard work, dedication, and teamwork. Her coaching philosophy emphasizes understanding the game’s intricacies while fostering a competitive spirit among her players.
