New Orleans Privateers Triumph Over UT Rio Grande Valley in Convincing 85-69 Win

In an impressive display of athletic prowess, the New Orleans Privateers claimed a significant victory over the UT Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros, winning 85-69 in a Southland Conference battle held in Edinburg, Texas. This game marked a critical juncture for both teams in their ongoing quest for conference supremacy.

Buckley’s Stellar Performance

Leading the charge for the Privateers was Jakevion Buckley, who lit up the scoreboard with an astounding 32 points. Buckley’s efficiency on the court was evident as he shot 60% from the field, converting 12 of 20 attempts. His ability to remain composed under pressure also saw him grab five rebounds, contributing significantly to his team’s overall performance.

Alongside Buckley, Coleton Benson offered valuable support by adding 12 points to the total. Benson’s shooting was pivotal, particularly from the free-throw line, where he went a perfect 4 for 4. Moreover, MJ Thomas showcased his versatility by tallying eight points and pulling down 10 rebounds, helping to create second-chance opportunities for the Privateers.

Vaqueros’ Resilience

On the other side of the court, Koree Cotton was a standout performer for the Vaqueros, finishing with 24 points, eight rebounds, and an impressive four assists. Cotton’s dynamic play kept the Vaqueros competitive and showcased his skills as a future star in college basketball. Filip Brankovic also contributed significantly, scoring 12 points to bolster the team’s offensive effort.

Despite the efforts from Cotton and Brankovic, the Vaqueros struggled to regain momentum throughout various stages of the game. In particular, a mid-game drought proved costly, where UT Rio Grande Valley failed to score for over three minutes, allowing the Privateers to build to a commanding lead.

Game Dynamics and Statistics

The first half set the tone, as the Privateers raced to a 35-24 lead at halftime. A pivotal moment occurred when New Orleans executed a 14-0 run, effectively shutting out the Vaqueros for more than seven minutes. This offensive burst exemplified the Privateers’ ability to capitalize on defensive lapses from their opponents.

Though the Vaqueros made attempts to rally, narrowing the deficit to just four points at times, they ultimately fell short due to inconsistent scoring and the pressure applied by New Orleans.

Key Game Statistics:

  • Final Score: New Orleans 85, UT Rio Grande Valley 69
  • New Orleans Shooting: 52% from the field
  • UT Rio Grande Valley Shooting: 40%
  • Privateers Rebounds: 35
  • Vaqueros Rebounds: 29

Conclusion

This victory places the New Orleans Privateers at 5-8 overall and 2-1 in the Southland Conference, while the Vaqueros drop to 5-7 and 1-2. As the season progresses, this win is crucial for New Orleans, bolstering their confidence heading into future games. The collaboration between Buckley and his teammates illustrates the team’s potential as they aim for a strong finish in this competitive season.
