Fatal Shooting Incident in Hargill: A Detailed Account

In a tragic incident on New Year’s Day, a man from Hargill lost his life after an altercation escalated into gun violence. Law enforcement has identified the prime suspect as Jose Ascencion Lopez Jr., age 23. The incident raises serious concerns about public safety and gun violence in the community.

According to a release from the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office, the confrontation occurred on January 1st, leading to the death of David Adam Garza, a 41-year-old resident. After the altercation, Garza attempted to flee the scene but tragically crashed his vehicle.

  • Initial Altercation: The altercation took place in the vicinity of 600 Couch Avenue, where Garza was shot multiple times by Lopez.
  • Vehicle Crash: After the shooting, Garza drove away but collided with another vehicle shortly after, subsequently crashing his white Toyota Tundra into a tree.
  • Emergency Response: Law enforcement arrived at the scene around 8:17 PM when dispatch received reports of the crash. Upon reaching the site, deputies discovered Garza unresponsive, suffering from a gunshot wound.

Witnesses at the scene attempted to assist Garza until medical personnel arrived, but unfortunately, he was pronounced dead due to his injuries.

Lopez has been charged with murder, and his bond has been set at a staggering $1.5 million. Law enforcement recovered a handgun at the scene that matched the caliber of the ammunition used in the shooting.
