Extradition of Criminal Illegal Immigrant in Texas: The Case of Misael Valdez-Tellez

Overview of the Extradition

In a significant move by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), authorities have extradited Misael Valdez-Tellez, a 20-year-old illegal immigrant from Mexico, accused of serious state crimes. His extradition took place just before his scheduled release from federal custody at the Federal Corrections Institute in Big Spring, Texas, on June 30, 2025.

Background of the Case

Valdez-Tellez was previously incarcerated for illegal re-entry into the United States, a conviction handed down by the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas on March 3, 2025. His legal troubles extend beyond immigration violations; he is implicated in a violent incident that occurred in Edinburg, Texas.

The High-Speed Pursuit

In 2023, the DPS Criminal Investigations Division (CID) identified Valdez-Tellez as the driver involved in a reckless high-speed vehicle pursuit. The chase involved a Ford F-250 pickup truck and resulted in a crash that injured another driver. Notably, Valdez-Tellez fled the accident scene, which spurred further investigations by law enforcement.

During the investigation, troopers discovered a 9mm Smith & Wesson handgun inside the abandoned F-250, which was reported stolen from Harris County. This incident not only highlighted his evasion of law enforcement but also underscored the serious nature of the offenses committed.

Criminal Charges Against Valdez-Tellez

Misael Valdez-Tellez faces multiple criminal charges, including:

  • Evading Arrest with a Motor Vehicle
  • Theft of Property
  • Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle
  • Unlawful Carrying of a Weapon
  • Failure to Stop and Render Aid Involving Injury

Given the severity of these charges, the DPS acted swiftly to ensure that Valdez-Tellez would not evade accountability. His transport to Hidalgo County Jail was facilitated by the DPS Aircraft Operations Division (AOD), highlighting the coordinated efforts of law enforcement agencies.

Immigration Detainer and Next Steps

In light of Valdez-Tellez’s criminal background, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainer has been placed on him. This legal measure allows federal authorities to maintain oversight of individuals involved in criminal activities while addressing immigration violations. The presence of such a detainer is a clear indication of the federal government’s commitment to upholding immigration laws.

Conclusion

The recent extradition of Misael Valdez-Tellez by the Texas Department of Public Safety serves as a critical reminder of the complex interplay between state and federal law enforcement efforts. It underscores the importance of addressing criminal activities that pose threats to public safety, particularly those involving illegal immigrants. As Valdez-Tellez faces serious charges in Hidalgo County, this situation continues to unfold, and public safety remains a priority for Texas authorities.
