Two local poetry groups are inviting the community to partake in an event at the Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park that will celebrate the landscape and people of the region.
RGV Women’s Poet Society and the Poets Against Walls collective are hosting a “Celebration of the Land and the People of the Rio Grande Valley” at the state park Sunday, which will feature various community poets and speakers.
Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park is located at 2800 S. Bentsen Palm Drive (FM 2062) in Mission.
In addition to local and state poet laureates, speakers include Juan B. Mancias, the tribal chair of the Carrizo/Comecrudo Tribe of Texas.

“We want to honor the beauty of the land as a community,” said poet Paola Carrasco, who is also one of the organizers of the event.
The event begins at 6 p.m. Sunday, with the organizers encouraging those seeking to attend to arrive an hour early at 5 p.m. to enjoy the state park.
The first 40 guests will receive free entrance to the park, courtesy of the event organizers. After those tickets have been claimed, the park’s entrance fee is $3 per person.
The RGV Women’s Poet Society, which can be found at @womenspoetsocietyrgv on Instagram, is a group of poets supporting each other’s writing and embarking in community projects.
The Poets Against Walls collective works to write, document and share stories, poetry, testimonies and spoken word from the border region and beyond.
