TEXAS — Anticipating heavy rains throughout the weekend in the Rio Grande Valley, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is working around the clock to keep drivers safe when floodwaters take over state highways.
When it comes to protecting people on state highways when flooding is a threat, TxDOT’s message hasn’t changed.
“Turn around, don’t drown,” said TxDOT Pharr District spokesperson Ray Pedraza.
Heavy rains fell on far South Texas Thursday night and are expected to keep coming the entire weekend. Pedraza is paying attention to weather alerts for the next several days.
“The National Weather Service is advising that this slow-moving system can produce heavy rain and flash flooding for our region through Monday,” Pedraza said.
That same system has cranked out pop-up rain in the Rio Grande Valley. TxDOT crews are out and about checking for problematic low-lying areas where rainwater runs.
“All week long our maintenance crews have been patrolling our state highways in our region, making sure our drain inlets and drainage are free of debris,” Pedraza said.
While TxDOT is guarding state highways, municipalities regionwide have offered sandbags to help protect homes and businesses.
“The city is providing a wonderful service for the residents and businesses as well,” Mission, Texas, resident Marla Munoz said.
Mission city workers have been handing out about 3,000 sandbags a day.
“Better to be safe than sorry,” Mission native David Escalera said while filling sand into bags supplied by the city.
Pedraza said crews are prepared when rising water becomes a hazard.
“Also ready to deploy barricades to close any roadways if necessary,” Pedraza said.
TxDOT will work around the clock until the threat of floodwaters is gone.
“If we get a lot of rainfall in a short period of time, we could have problems anywhere,” Pedraza said. “That’s why our crews will be patrolling the roadways the entire weekend.”
