McALLEN — Despite the humidity Tuesday evening, local officials, healthcare workers and community leaders gathered together to celebrate a milestone in cancer care in the region.
With fans in hand swaying back and forth people stood side by side as Texas Oncology officially opened the doors to its newest clinic — Texas Oncology-McAllen West.
Balloons of teal and yellow adorned the stage while the mariachi set the mood for the celebration.
Dr. Guillermo Lazo, medical oncologist and hematologist, made his way to the stage with the sound of cheers and clapping from the crowd.
He smiled as he addressed the people in attendance, noting that this moment did not only mark the opening of a new building but rather the continued effort to expand care in the ever-growing Rio Grande Valley.
He explained that for 32 years their cancer center on Second Street in McAllen has served the community.
A clinic that started with just two providers now has 14 who help treat Valley residents, and although the building may not have grown the team has continued to grow to meet the needs of the community.
For Lazo, this new facility has been a long time coming.
“As a physician who spent my career caring for patients in this Valley, tonight is … meaningful to me,” Lazo said, adding he hopes this building will help ease some of the stress on patients as they face the challenges that come with a cancer diagnosis.

He recalled moments when he would have to tell patients they needed a particular exam but would have to travel outside their hometown for the care they needed.
“Cancer does not wait for us to get organized,” Lazo said. “We know that early detection matters … a late diagnosis isn’t bad luck. It is what happens when care is far away and answers take weeks … we’re here to make that distance shorter.”
The new 15,000-square-foot facility features a state-of-the-art PET scanner, a full clinical laboratory, four physician offices, 13 exam rooms, and 20 infusion chairs including a private infusion room.
“A patient can be diagnosed here, can be scanned here, have labs drawn here, can start treatment here in this same week close to home,” Lazo said.

He added that the organization plans to add surgical oncology services at the clinic in the near future.
Lazo smiled at the crowd as he thanked the mayor, physicians and hospital partners as well as patients, their families and the oncology team for the effort made to make the opening possible.
With a gentle tone he dedicated those efforts to open the facility to their patients.
“You, our patients, are the reason for all of this,” Lazo said in Spanish. “To this community, this Valley, this is for you all. We built it here in your home because this is where it belongs.”
The new facility is located at 1800 S. Main St., Suite 600 in McAllen and is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
