Every year, thousands of women receive a breast cancer diagnosis. As breast cancer rates continue to climb across the United States, health experts are urging women not to delay routine screenings that could save their lives.

Breast cancer incidence rates rose approximately 1% annually between 2012 and 2021, according to the American Cancer Society, with even greater increases among women under age 50. 

While researchers point to factors like obesity, inactivity, delayed childbirth and changing hormone patterns, the growing trend highlights an urgent need for greater awareness and preventive care.

Early detection remains one of the most effective tools in the fight against breast cancer. Finding the disease before symptoms develop can dramatically improve treatment options, increase survival rates and help women avoid more aggressive therapies.

Mammograms continue to be the gold standard for screening, capable of detecting tiny abnormalities that cannot be seen or felt. For many women, that simple screening can mean the difference between finding cancer early and discovering it after it has progressed.

“Too many women put off mammograms because they’re busy, feel healthy or don’t believe they’re at risk,” said Martha Cano, MD, a family medicine physician with South Texas Health System (STHS) Clinics. “But breast cancer often develops without warning signs. By the time a lump can be felt, the disease may be more advanced. Screening mammography gives us the opportunity to find cancer earlier, when treatment is often more effective and the chances of survival are significantly higher.”

To promote the importance of routine screenings and help women prioritize their breast health, STHS will once again launch its annual Think Pink campaign in observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Throughout October, women across the Rio Grande Valley can take advantage of reduced-cost mammography services at STHS McAllen, STHS Edinburg, STHS ER Mission and STHS ER Weslaco.

In addition, each participating facility will host a special Mammo Monday event featuring complimentary refreshments, educational resources and the opportunity to learn more about breast health and screening services.

The American Cancer Society recommends that women ages 40 to 44 have the option of annual mammograms, women ages 45 to 54 receive screenings every year and women 55 and older continue screening every one to two years based on their healthcare provider’s recommendations.

“Annual mammograms remain one of the most effective ways to detect breast cancer early, often before symptoms develop,” said Charlie Aguirre, Director of Radiology Services, STHS McAllen. “By offering these reduced cash prices throughout October, we hope to remove barriers to screening and encourage more women to take an important step toward protecting their health. Whether it’s for your own peace of mind or to ensure prompt treatment if needed, a mammogram can make all the difference.”

As part of the Think Pink campaign, STHS will also host its annual Think Pink Parade on Saturday, October 3, from 8:00 a.m. to noon at STHS McAllen. The event invites community members, businesses, organizations and first responders to decorate their vehicles in pink and join a visible show of support for breast cancer survivors, patients and families affected by the disease.

Awards will be presented in several categories, including First Responders, Community, Staff and Car/Motorcycle Club. The event will also feature a community expo where attendees can connect with healthcare professionals, learn about breast cancer prevention and screening services, and explore local resources available to patients and families.
