If you’ve ever driven down the long stretch of highway that leads to South Padre Island, then you’ve probably seen the dinosaurs and larger-than-life sea creatures that beckon drivers to stop and enjoy some whimsy like some sort of silent South Texas sirens.
The so-called “family fun center” is much more than a tourist trinket shop with eyecatching sculptures. It’s a fanciful wonderland that over the last 40 years has evolved from being a company that sold seashells to the quirky curio shop and amusement center.
Bobz World’s story got its start in 1989, when husband and wife duo, Robert (Bob) and Elizabeth Harris founded U.S. Shell Inc. in nearby San Benito, according to the Los Fresnos News. The company quickly became one of the largest wholesalers of shells in the world. In 2006, the couple opened Bobz World at 36451 TX-100, Los Fresnos, TX 78566.
Located at the edge of the Los Fresnos city limits, just before the long stretch of empty highway drivers must traverse before arriving at the best beach in Texas, the family fun center is hard to miss. A larger-than-life sculpture of a reef faces the highway, with ginormous angel fish, menacing eels, gape-mouthed sharks and corals. Past the entrance gate, a life-sized brachiosaurus and two heavily-armored stegosauruses stand as if frozen in time during a parade. A trio of bottle-nosed dolphins leap from a turquoise blue wave in the parking lot.
And then there’s the building itself. Off to the side, a small volcano set among a cluster of Washingtonia palms appears to be erupting with red-hot magma. Meanwhile, the building’s entrance is flanked by two conch shells large enough to hold Jonah and his whale inside. Between them, visitors must pass through the skeletal jaws of an unfathomably large shark and into a foyer where a great white appears to be diving down from the ceiling, its tooth-filled jaws ready to strike.
Inside Bobz World, visitors will still find the very thing that got the Harrises started all those years ago — seashells. A dizzying variety of scallops and conchs, oyster shells with iridescent nacre, carved cowrie shells, dried coral specimens and more. You’ll also find seaside-themed home decor, apparel, beach toys and souvenirs, as well as an old-fashioned ice cream shop that serves up Texas-favorite Blue Bell.
But shopping, Bobz World offers visitors a bevy of things to do, including black-light mini golf, mini bowling, a small videogame arcade, and an indoor and outdoor experience called “Bobz Journey” that leads through nearly two dozen exhibits on everything from NASA, to Bruce Lee, to a waterless undersea scape. Outside, the journey continued amid a tropical paradise of plants and water features guarded by a 50-foot-tall gorilla. The jingle-like garden is filled with even more fantastical creatures, from massive mammoths, to animals from the African savannah and yes, to even more dinosaurs.
