MCALLEN, Texas — As the McAllen Economic Development Corporation closes out its fiscal year, the organization is leaning heavily into strategic workforce development and AI-driven small business tools to sustain regional growth, according to MEDC President and CEO Elizabeth Suarez.
Speaking at the MEDC quarterly stakeholders meeting held at the McAllen Chamber of Commerce, Suarez highlighted the agency’s accomplishments over the past year while setting the stage for upcoming international recruitment trips and community partnerships.
“We’re really happy to report that we’ve come into the last month of the fiscal year and we had a very active year,” Suarez told stakeholders. “The focus for the team, as we ended this fiscal year, has really been leaning into the processes to finalize our budgets. We’ve got a good budget finalized and a good plan of action for our strategy as we start the new fiscal year.”
Suarez also leads the McAllen Chamber of Commerce.
A major cornerstone of MEDC’s recent momentum stems from landing major industrial opportunities, such as the Valeo project, which has required an aggressive, coordinated effort to strengthen the local talent pipeline. Suarez credited higher education institutions—including South Texas College, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, and Texas A&M University—alongside municipal and county leadership for building a ready workforce.
“The bulk of the work that we landed the Valeo deal in the community has been workforce development,” Suarez said, pointing to a recent three-event panel series that brought company representatives directly to engineering students across regional campuses. “That’s the heart of why we all are doing this work: to open and create those opportunities.”
Suarez also emphasized bi-county collaboration, noting that economic development entities across Hidalgo and Cameron counties continue to work jointly to market the region.
Looking ahead to the upcoming fiscal year, the MEDC and the McAllen Chamber of Commerce are aligning to roll out new resources for small businesses navigating broader economic headwinds. Key initiatives include marketing guides for chamber members and new technological integrations.
Notably, Suarez announced that the McAllen Chamber has been selected as a Google partner to offer specialized AI certifications for local small businesses. The chamber will also launch a digital tool designed to help small business owners identify operational bottlenecks and matching support programs directly through the chamber’s portal.
“The name of the game is to be on the ground, to be present in the room where opportunities are being pitched, and then to really provide programs that are really important,” Suarez said. “It’s not just about networking.”
