HARLINGEN, Texas — The City of Harlingen has officially been designated a Tourism Friendly Texas Certified Community by Travel Texas, recognizing the city’s ongoing efforts to grow tourism, welcome visitors and strengthen Harlingen as a destination in the Rio Grande Valley and across Texas.

The Tourism Friendly Texas Certified Community program was created by Travel Texas to encourage communities throughout the state to pursue tourism as an economic development strategy. The certification recognizes communities that complete a multi-step process focused on strengthening tourism efforts, partnerships and opportunities for continued growth.

Tourism plays an important role in Harlingen’s economy and supports local businesses, events, attractions, restaurants, hotels and other destinations throughout the community.

Through Visit Harlingen, the city promotes attractions and activities including birding, golf, fishing, trails and parks, shopping, food and drink, and local events.

The certification also builds on Harlingen’s broader efforts to enhance quality of life and strengthen the city’s appeal to both visitors and residents. Those efforts include continued investment in parks and trails, downtown revitalization, cultural and community events, outdoor recreation and partnerships highlighting what makes Harlingen unique.

Harlingen now joins communities across Texas that have completed the Tourism Friendly Texas certification process. The designation provides recognition and resources as the city continues developing tourism as part of its local economic development efforts.
