Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai is wagering his next Commissioners Court meeting attire on whether the University of Texas at San Antonio Roadrunners can beat the UT Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros.
If the Roadrunners win, Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez will wear UTSA gear at his next Commissioners Court meeting. If the Vaqueros win, Sakai will wear UTRGV gear at his next meeting.

The wager was announced ahead of Saturday’s game, which is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at the Alamodome. The matchup will be the first between the two teams and their season opener. The losing judge will wear the winning university’s shirt or jersey and cap.
Sakai, who was born and raised in the Rio Grande Valley, attended what is now UTRGV when it was known as Pan American University. He said he has “a lot of respect and affection” for the school.
“But my loyalty stands with UTSA,” Sakai said. “I’m the Bexar County Judge, and when the Vaqueros come to the 210, I’ll be cheering for our Roadrunners. I’m looking forward to a great game, a little friendly South Texas rivalry, and seeing Judge Cortez sporting some orange and blue when UTSA gets the win. Birds Up!”

UTSA is entering a season of significant change under coach Jeff Traylor, including a new offensive coordinator and an overhauled defense with only two returning players who started more than half of last season’s games.
Quarterback Owen McCown and running back Will Henderson are among the key offensive players returning for UTSA. The Roadrunners also hope the return of outside linebacker Cam Cooper, who missed most of last season with a knee injury, will bolster a pass rush that struggled at times in 2025.
UTRGV is entering its second football season after going 9-3 in its inaugural season, including a 5-3 record in Southland Conference play.
