The 59-year-old man whose body was pulled from a canal late Tuesday night is being remembered as someone who was always willing to help.
The San Juan Police Department identified the man as Alejandro Quintero, and said he died after accidentally falling into a canal north of the 600 block of East El Dora Road.
Neighbors who live behind the canal say they would often see Quintero walking along the area. One of those neighbors, Maggie Gonzalez, says she is still in shock and is holding on to memories of a friend who was part of her family’s life for years.
For Gonzalez, Quintero wasn’t just someone she would see walking by. He was a friend of more than 14 years.
Gonzalez has lived on Grandora Street in San Juan with her husband for more than a decade. She says seeing Quintero walk along the canal and through the neighborhood was part of his everyday routine.
“He would sometimes cross because there’s like a little bridge on the canal to get close to where he lived,” Gonzalez said.
She says Quintero would often stop by to check on them and was always willing to help.
“He would always ask us if we wanted him to mow the lawn ever since my husband had the stroke,” Gonzalez said.
On Tuesday evening, neighbors say they saw Quintero for the last time.

“I was surprised by what happened to him. I mean, we feel so, so bad. We prayed for him last night,” Gonzalez said.
With canals running through communities across the Rio Grande Valley, McAllen Fire Department Fire Chief Juan Angel Gloria Jr. said people need to be aware of the dangers.
“Even if the individual knows how to swim, the currents and canals are different from a river and different from a pond or different from a lake,”
Chief Gloria recommends staying at least 10 to 15 feet away from the edge. He also advises against putting yourself in danger by trying to help if someone or a pet falls in.
Investigators have not yet determined exactly why Quintero fell into the canal. The investigation remains ongoing.
