One of the biggest cities on the Texas–Mexico border is also one of the safest in America, according to a new analysis by SmartAsset, a financial technology company that offers free online personal finance tools.

In the company’s newest ranking of “America’s Safest Big Cities — 2026,” the city of Laredo ranked as the sixth-safest city in the United States. SmartAsset took a look at data from 83 large cities across the country — those with populations of 250,000 or more people — to determine how they stacked up in terms of violent crime, property crime, traffic fatality rates and disaster risks.

In its analysis, SmartAsset found that the Lone Star State is home to both the safest and most dangerous cities in the country. Laredo and Plano, in North Texas, made it to the list of the top 10 safest large cities, while Dallas and Houston ranked among the 10 least safest.

Part of what made Laredo such a safe city is a relatively low rate of violent crime — just 3.7 crimes per 1,000 people — and a low rate of property crimes — about 14.6 per 1,000 people. By contrast, in Houston, the second “least safest” big city, there are an average of 11.5 violent crimes per 1,000 people and a staggering 42.9 property crimes per 1,000 people. Houston’s proximity to the coast also put its risk of a natural disaster at “very high,” while SmartAsset marked Laredo’s as “relatively moderate.”

Laredo isn’t the only city in South Texas that can boast about its safe track record. Earlier this year, Brownsville and McAllen — the two largest cities in the Rio Grande Valley — reported 21% drops in their crime rates, according to new data collected by the Texas Department of Public Safety’s Uniform Crime Reporting.

McAllen, in particular, announced that it had achieved the lowest crime levels in 40 years. The number of violent crimes against people all fell in 2025 compared to 2024, including murder, which fell by 75%, rapes, which fell by 22.4%, and robberies, which fell by 42.9%, according to the McAllen Police Department.
