A Dallas man was found to be attempting to smuggle more than 20 firearms into Mexico from Brownsville for financial gain while knowing that it’s illegal to do so without a license, according to a criminal complaint.
Francisco Hernandez-Herrera is charged with knowingly facilitating the transportation of certain merchandise and sale contrary to United States law or regulation.
On Wednesday, a Homeland Security Investigations special agent received information that Hernandez-Herrera was involved in purchasing and exporting guns to Mexico, the criminal complaint stated.
That same day, Hernandez-Herrera had applied for entry as a pedestrian at the Gateway International Bridge in Brownsville where he was escorted to secondary inspection, which is when Customs and Border Protection officers alerted the special agent.
Hernandez-Herrera agreed to speak with law enforcement and “indicated” that he had traveled from Dallas to Brownsville.
He added that his vehicle was parked about two blocks from the bridge and that he intended to drive the vehicle into Mexico.
Hernandez-Herrera then gave verbal permission for the special agent to relocate his vehicle to the port of entry and even provided verbal consent to search it.
“A search of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of 21 firearms, 23 magazines, and more than 5,000 rounds of ammunition concealed within the vehicle,” the complaint said.
Hernandez-Herrera admitted to purchasing the items found with the intention of exporting them to Mexico for financial gain knowing that it was illegal to do so.
According to the complaint, Hernandez-Herrera said that he drove from Dallas to Brownsville on Wednesday with the items already concealed in the vehicle.
He also stated that he had previously purchased and exported firearms from the U.S. to Mexico on at least five prior occasions with the most recent occurrence happening in December.
Hernandez-Herrera remains in custody and is scheduled for a preliminary examination hearing in Brownsville federal court on Wednesday.
