Cameron County District Attorney Luis V. Saenz announced on Facebook Monday the sentencing of a teenager who pleaded guilty to killing a man when he was 16 years old on June 1, 2024.
Donovan Yandel Martinez Tirado, who is now 17, pleaded guilty to the murder of 22-year-old Angel Bibiano Montoya and was sentenced to 35 years in prison, according to Saenz.
Martinez is charged with two other suspects.
On May 11, Luis Manuel Hernandez, 19, also pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of murder and was sentenced to 25 years in prison. He was 16 at the time of the murder.
The third suspect, 21-year-old Jose Luis Ibarra — who was 18 at the time of the fatal shooting — pleaded guilty to murder on Jan. 28 is facing 40 years in prison. His sentencing is currently scheduled for next Monday, according to court filings.
The shooting occurred on June 1, 2024, at a barber shop located in the 2500 block of East University Boulevard.
“At 6:27 p.m. officers arrived and were directed to the barber shop where they found the victim with an apparent gunshot wound,” Brownsville police spokeswoman Abril Luna said in a Facebook video regarding details of the shooting.
Montoya was then transported to a local hospital where he died.
According to Luna, Montoya met with two other individuals in a parking lot attempting to sell a firearm before being shot and ran back inside the barber shop where he collapsed before the suspects fled in a red Chevrolet Colorado.
Following a failed traffic stop, three suspects were arrested after police found the truck in the 800 block of East Taylor Street.
