I am Marissa Castañeda, senior executive vice president at DHR Health.

On behalf of our board of managers, our partners, our physicians, nurses and our entire team, it is my great honor to welcome you to yet another exciting milestone here at DHR Health: the groundbreaking of the DHR Health and the University of Houston’s new Medical Research and Education Center.

Today marks the beginning of something truly transformative for our region. The new center, in partnership with the University of Houston, represents a monumental step forward for health care in the Rio Grande Valley. Once complete, the four story, state-of-the-art facility, will serve as a comprehensive base for medicine and education. The new center will provide the most advanced imaging and laboratory services. It will also house clinical research services, medical research and graduate medical education programs and patient clinics, as well as dedicated space for DHR Health and the University of Houston’s academic partnership.

Through this center, we will advance research that will enable intervention in diseases. It will also ensure that patients receive timely and proactive care. Just as important, it will allow us to deliver care locally, so families no longer have to leave the area to receive care. This facility will bring first class therapies and the latest clinical trials directly to this community, particularly in the areas of cancer, liver disease, obesity and Alzheimer’s.

More than just a building, this Medical Research and Education Center will raise the standard of care across the Rio Grande Valley and South Texas. It creates an academic and research environment rooted in the needs of this region. Here, future students in the field of medicine and medical research will conduct studies that are specific to our population, research that reflects our patients, our challenges and opportunities to improve health outcomes locally. We are also building a strong and sustainable physician pipeline. Over the next decade, this center has the potential to help train hundreds of physicians who will treat patients right here. We are deeply grateful for our partnership with the University of Houston, whose commitment to academic excellence strengthens and elevates these initiatives.

Ultimately, this Medical Research and Education Center sets a whole new benchmark. It is a hub for advancement that will result in physician and health care training and a true model for how academic medicine and community health care can come together to enhance lives.

Today, we are extremely honored to be joined by a very important group of guests. We are joined by our future. Here with us are a group of students from McAllen ISD proudly wearing their white lab coats. These remarkable students are the current elementary school winners of the district’s Science Olympiad. Congratulations, boys and girls. Thank you. These students represent the next generation of healthcare professionals. They are future physicians, future researchers, nurses and more, who will one day transform lives in our own community. A special thank you to your parents, your teachers and staff for being here with us today.

Today’s milestone would not be possible without the vision and support of leaders who recognize the pivotal impact that both DHR Health and the University of Houston have in the areas of health care, education and medical research. The State of Texas made a powerful statement through its $15 million appropriation during the 89th legislative session, demonstrating a commitment not only to medical advancement and discovery, but to strengthening communities here in our region. DHR Health would like to express our deepest gratitude to Gov. Governor Greg Abbott, Lieutenant Gov. Dan Patrick and the chairs of both the Senate Finance Committee and House Appropriations Committee. Thank you for investments like this one that will bring life to the center, and for believing in South Texas and DHR Health and UH.

Editor’s Note: The above guest column is based on remarks made by Marissa Castañeda, senior executive vice president for DHR Health at a grounbreaking ceremony for DHR Health and the University of Houston’s new Medical Research and Education Center. The center is being built on the DHR medical campus in north McAllen.
