There’s been a lot of turnover at the highest-rated TV station in the Rio Grande Valley over the last year.

Within the past few months, nearly half a dozen on-air talent have signed off at KRGV Channel 5 News, the Valley’s ABC affiliate that has been privately owned by the Manship family of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, for the past six decades.

Station leadership alluded to that trend, telling MySA that change is simply part of the local news business.

“News contracts typically run two to three years, after which individuals may move back home or pursue new opportunities. This is standard in the news and journalism industry,” KRGV News Director Angie Martinez told MySA via email.

“We understand viewers for strong connections with our on air staff, but we always encourage our team members to grow professionally and we will be happy to welcome them back if their paths lead them to KRGV in the future,” she said.

Weekend sports anchor Gloria Morelia announces December 2026 exit

A week earlier, sportscaster Gloria Morelia announced her time at KRGV was winding up after three years as a sideline reporter and weekend sports anchor. Morelia told MySA that her contract had come to an end this summer, but she had agreed to a brief extension through December. That will allow her to continue reporting on the Valley’s first-ever Division 1 college football team, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros.

The Denver, Colorado native first came to the Valley to serve as a sports anchor for KRGV’s Spanish-language news brand, Noticias RGV. She transferred to the English-language side of the newsroom shortly before KRGV abruptly shuttered Noticias and laid off its staff last July.

Weekend anchor Daniella Hernandez leaves after more than three years

In June, Daniella Hernandez announced she was leaving after 3.5 years. The Harlingen native who earned her degree from UTRGV started her tenure behind the scenes as an associate producer. Eventually, she became a sideline sports reporter and, ultimately, a weekend anchor.

Morning anchor Sandra Rodriguez exits in May

In May, Channel 5 News This Morning co-anchor Sandra Rodriguez announced she was stepping down after five years at the desk. The Pennsylvania native thanked viewers “for embracing me from the very beginning and welcoming me into your homes.” In addition to co-hosting the three-hour weekday morning show, Rodriguez also served as a field reporter.

Beloved meteorologist Cecilia Gutierrez quietly exits after nearly a decade

Rodriguez wasn’t the only one to leave the morning show. In early April, longtime meteorologist Cecilia Gutierrez quietly ended her time at KRGV without fanfare. Gutierrez joined the station in 2017 and quickly established herself as a trusted source during some of the Valley’s most treacherous weather events.

Gutierrez told MySA she chose not to make an on-air goodbye during her last newscast. It wasn’t until June that she took to social media to explain her months-long absence to viewers. Gutierrez stepped away from television to focus on her family with her new husband and fellow University of the Incarnate Word grad, Michael Baker, as well as her lifelong passion for teaching music.

Channel 5 News welcomes Jay Martin to the KRGV Weather team

Not long after, KRGV welcomed a new member to the KRGV Weather team. During his official welcome in mid-June, Jay Martin told Idani Cantu, host of the station’s weekday lifestyle show, Take 5, that he and his wife had come to the Valley after she was hired as a veterinarian at Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville. He also quipped that he sews the bow ties he wears on air. Prior to joining KRGV, Martin worked at AccuWeather and for television stations in Baton Rouge, San Angelo, and Clarksburg, West Virginia.
