Television news viewers in the Rio Grande Valley may have noticed that one of their favorite meteorologists hasn’t been on the air for the last few months. There wasn’t an official goodbye. No splashy announcements. Just a quiet stepping out of the limelight after spending nearly a decade glowing in living rooms and kitchens across the Valley.

Cecilia Gutierrez, who Valley viewers came to rely upon for their morning forecast and traffic news, stepped away from the region’s top-rated television station, KRGV Channel 5 News, at the beginning of April. Last week, Gutierrez took to social media to explain why.

“For years, I have had the incredible privilege to help you prepare for everything from sunny skies to severe storms. Your trust, support, and kindness have meant more to me than I can express,” Gutierrez said in a Facebook post on Wednesday, June 17.

“As I begin this next chapter, I am excited to devote more time to my new marriage, embrace my lifelong passion for teaching, especially teaching music, and allow myself the opportunity to get some much-needed rest,” she said.

Gutierrez joined KRGV as a reporter for the station’s morning newscast in June 2017. Within a couple of years, she transitioned into the role of morning meteorologist. But the odd hours and long shifts that working a morning newscast requires began to take a toll on her — one Gutierrez said she became acutely more aware of after getting married.

“After I got married, I started to realize that, like, oh, I never get to see my husband,” Gutierrez told MySA recently.

The pair met while attending Incarnate Word University in San Antonio. Gutierrez started out studying music before changing her major to meteorology. But music continued to play an important role in her life. She spent three years as a drum major for the UIW Marching Cardinals and has continued playing the oboe to this day. After college, Gutierrez moved back home to the Valley to serve the community where she grew up. Eventually, Michael Baker, the man who would become her husband, followed her.

As Gutierrez built her meteorology career, she also kept up with music off-air by serving as a technical director for her alma mater, McAllen High School. In January, she and Baker returned to Incarnate Word to get married at Motherhouse Chapel. Several of her current and former on-air colleagues were part of the celebration, including KSAT’s John Paul Barajas. Afterward, Gutierrez began to take stock. She missed music. She enjoyed the opportunities she’d had to teach it to the band kids at McHi, even in a part-time capacity. She wanted to start fresh in her new marriage.

By March, she had made the decision to leave television. She chose not to say goodbye on air. Gutierrez said she’ll miss the viewers and coworkers, but also the thrill of the job.

“I’ll miss the rush, the adrenaline rush when you know you are being sent out into a severe storm,” Gutierrez — now Cecilia Gutierrez Baker — said.
