Community Partners Help Rio Grande Council Bring STEM Careers to Life for Scouts
For exactly a century this year, the Rio Grande Council of Scouting America has helped young people learn the meaning of the Scout motto: “Be Prepared.” While that mission still includes outdoor adventure, camping, leadership, and service, today’s Scouts must also be prepared for a world increasingly shaped by science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
To meet that challenge, the Rio Grande Council has launched its innovative STEM Camp at Camp Perry, creating opportunities for Scouts to explore dozens of STEM-related merit badges while learning directly from professionals working in those fields every day.
The program has quickly become one of the Council’s most exciting offerings, introducing young people to careers they may never have considered while connecting them with mentors from across the Rio Grande Valley.
What makes the camp especially unique is the involvement of local community partners who volunteer their time, expertise, facilities, and resources to give Scouts a real-world look at STEM careers in action.
According to Rio Grande Council Board President Dr. Andrew Phillips, those partnerships are the key to the camp’s success.
“They’re the ones that make it possible,” Phillips said. “Scouting, particularly in the Valley, runs on volunteers and a shoestring budget. The STEM merit badges help kids realize something new in their community. They can learn what a meteorologist does, what an engineer does, what a computer programmer does. Even if they don’t choose that career, they become a more well-rounded individual and community member.”
The Council serves Scouts across Cameron, Hidalgo, Willacy, Starr, and Zapata counties. Through STEM Camp, participants can pursue a wide range of merit badges spanning science, technology, engineering, medicine, aviation, law, robotics, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and many other fields.
Rather than relying solely on classroom instruction, the camp brings in professionals who apply those skills daily in their careers.
One of those partners is McCreery Aviation, which helped Scouts earn the Aviation Merit Badge through an immersive experience that went far beyond textbooks.
“We are proud to sponsor the aviation merit badge class,” said Laura McCreery Pulido, Director of Human Resources for McCreery Aviation. “The Scouts were bused over here to get a hands-on introduction to aviation.”
During the program, Scouts spent several hours with flight instructors, learning about aerodynamics, aviation charts, and flight operations. They also had the opportunity to use a flight simulator and even participate in a discovery flight.
“It’s always great to get young people interested in flying,” McCreery Pulido said. “There aren’t many opportunities like this in this industry, so we thoroughly enjoyed being able to provide the experience. Our flight instructors enjoyed sharing their expertise with Scouts who already had a mutual interest in aviation.”
For many participants, meeting pilots and stepping into a cockpit can transform a distant career dream into something tangible and attainable.
That same principle applies in other merit badge programs.
Veteran broadcast meteorologist Bryan Hale of KGBT-TV has spent years teaching the Weather Merit Badge, helping Scouts understand the science behind the forecasts they see every day.
“There’s a workbook published by Scouting America, and my job is to go through it and make sure they understand what’s going on,” Hale explained. “Plus I add a little bit of something extra.”
Because one of the badge requirements involves discussing weather with a professional meteorologist, Hale is able to provide firsthand insight into both the science and the career itself.
“The Scouts love it,” he said. “They soak it up like a sponge.”
For Hale, the opportunity carries personal meaning. His son Quentin was an Eagle Scout whose passion for Scouting continues to inspire him.
“After he passed away in 2021, this became even more important to me,” Hale said. “I keep it going for him as a way to keep the home fires burning.”
Community partners also help Scouts discover career paths they may never have considered. Former State District Judge Ernest Aliseda, now Chief Operating Officer and Associate Vice President of Texas A&M University-McAllen, teaches Scouts about careers in law and the justice system.
“I think it’s important for young people to understand that careers in the legal profession are within their reach,” Aliseda said. “The exposure they gain through STEM Camp can really inspire their future.”
Aliseda notes that modern careers often cross disciplinary boundaries, creating new opportunities that blend law and technology.
“One exciting area is legal engineering,” he said. “It brings together law, technology, process design, patents, and other fields. A single experience like these merit badge classes can inspire a Scout to pursue something they may never have considered before.”
That inspiration is exactly what the Rio Grande Council hopes to achieve. While traditional Scouting skills remain a cornerstone of the program, STEM Camp gives young people the opportunity to explore emerging industries and meet professionals who serve as role models and mentors.
Phillips said the response from the community has been overwhelming.
“I spoke at the Edinburg Rotary and mentioned the need for merit badge counselors,” he recalled. “About a third of the group raised their hands and volunteered to teach their trade.”
That spirit of volunteerism has helped transform STEM Camp into much more than an educational program. It is a community-wide effort to invest in the next generation of leaders, innovators, entrepreneurs, healthcare professionals, engineers, pilots, scientists, and citizens.
As technology continues to reshape the world, the Rio Grande Council remains committed to preparing young people for the opportunities ahead. Through the generosity of local businesses, educators, healthcare providers, engineers, pilots, attorneys, meteorologists, and countless other volunteers, Scouts are discovering new interests, developing valuable skills, and gaining confidence in their future.
