SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas — Thousands of visitors are swarming South Padre Island in the hopes of witnessing SpaceX’s next Super Heavy test rocket launch.
“There’s definitely money,” said photographer Mark Lehmann.
Any time a Super Heavy countdown is heard beyond the southernmost point of Texas and the earth-shaking, massive sound of the world’s strongest and largest rockets begins to rumble, money explodes into the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) economy.
Lehmann said, “Economic wise, it’s good.”
Lehmann is an RGV native and businessman. Each time there is a launch from Boca Chica beach, Lehmann reaps the benefits of tourism that converges into the area.
“If you’re just talking money, there is money,” said Lehmann from the shores at South Padre Island.
The City of Brownsville recently published an economic impact white paper that shows since 2023, SpaceX’s Starbase headquarters pumps in $10 billion in gross revenue for the region. The study projects tourism alone last year delivered $99 million because of the SpaceX rocket launches.
SpaceX is a regional boom for tourism. South Padre Island sits a little more than 5 miles away from the rocket launch pad. That means people from all over the world travel to this famous island for a front-row seat of the next liftoff.
“I’ve saw people from Japan, people from everywhere,” Lehmann said.
Lehmann believes that international visitors are what is best economically when discussing tourism.
“Not only do I feel like that type of tourist is one of the best tourist, they have the means to hang out and wait and stay at these condos,” he said.
Lehmann’s friends make money, too.
“A friend of mine, she owns a restaurant here, and I asked her a couple of times how she is doing. And she says, ‘Oh man, we’re packed!’” Lehmann said.
The entrepreneur is also not left out of the SpaceX economic equation. He built Visit SPI, a website that delivers business directly to him.
“Like I said, I’ll get calls from Australia. They’ll say, ‘We’re in Perth and boarding our flight now. Where do we go watch?’” Lehmann said.
Lehmann said he is eager to do business as the countdown draws closer.
“I sell these photos to my clients who do listings. I have directly made some money,” he said.
The next SpaceX launch in far South Texas is scheduled for Wednesday.
