Rio Grande Valley’s Sosa Sisters Make ODP Water Polo History

Pioneering Athletes from South Texas

In a significant milestone for the Rio Grande Valley, Paloma Sosa and Pamela Sosa have made history by becoming the first athletes from the region to be selected for a USA Water Polo Olympic Development Program (ODP) team. This achievement was announced after their participation in the 2026 ODP Regional Championships held in Dallas, Texas.

Breaking New Ground in Water Polo

The sisters represented the Southwest Zone – South Red, with Paloma competing in the Girls Youth division for ages 15-17 and Pamela in the Girls Cadet division for ages 13-14. Their selections mark a groundbreaking moment for a region historically lacking access to elite-level club water polo opportunities.

“Being the first RGV athletes ever selected to an ODP team means making history for the Rio Grande Valley,” said Paloma. The impact of their achievement extends beyond personal success; it serves as an inspiration for other young athletes in the region, demonstrating that high-level competition is within reach.

Early Beginnings in Water Polo

Both sisters began their journey in water polo during middle school as preparation for high school sports. They quickly fell in love with the competitive nature of the game, the camaraderie among teammates, and the supportive environment in which they trained.

“I surrounded myself with the sport by attending games and improving my swimming and ball-handling skills,” Paloma recalled. Her dedication included setting ambitious goals, forming lasting friendships with teammates, and studying strategies from advanced games.

Training and Coaches

Currently, Paloma and Pamela attend PSJA Early College High School and train under the guidance of head coach Jon Landero at RGV Aquatics. Despite the challenges of promoting water polo in the Rio Grande Valley, Landero has played a crucial role in their development as athletes.

“To play any club games, we typically have to travel a minimum of three to four hours, and that’s relatively recent,” Coach Landero noted. “To see the Sosas get chosen to play amongst the best in Texas is a testament to their hard work, determination, and raw talent.”

Focus on Fundamentals

The Coaching staff built a strong foundation for the sisters, emphasizing fundamentals, conditioning, and game awareness. Paloma expressed gratitude for her coaches’ belief in her abilities, highlighting that being from the RGV should not limit her ambitions.

“Their support, guidance, and high expectations helped me be ready when this opportunity came,” she said.

Achievements and Future Aspirations

The journey of Paloma and Pamela has opened doors for future athletes in the Rio Grande Valley, allowing them to dream bigger and aim higher. Competing against talent from other regions has fueled their desire to elevate their skills.

“Competing against athletes from other regions pushed me to step up my game,” Paloma stated. “It was exciting to challenge myself and realize that all the hard work I put in actually prepared me for that level.”

The sisters are now looking forward to the upcoming 2026 ODP National Championships scheduled to take place in Northern California. Their participation in this prestigious event will provide them with invaluable experience and further opportunities for growth.

Significance for the Community

The Sosa sisters’ success signifies more than just individual achievements; it represents a beacon of hope for aspiring athletes from the Rio Grande Valley. Coach Landero expressed his pride in their accomplishments, emphasizing that they’ve broken through barriers that have long hindered the growth of water polo in the region.

“The Sosas making the ODP team is a great step forward that paves the way for others in our area,” Landero said. “This filled me with pride.”

Conclusion

The historic selection of Paloma and Pamela Sosa to the USA Water Polo ODP team marks an important chapter in the development of water polo in South Texas. Their journey highlights the potential for success within the region and inspires future generations to partake in the sport. As they continue their training and prepare for upcoming competitions, the Sosa sisters serve as role models and trailblazers in the world of water polo.
