Major Floodwater Channel Expansion Project in Hidalgo County Set for Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

The Hidalgo County Urban County Program (UCP), Precinct 1, and Drainage District No. 1 are excited to announce a significant milestone in flood protection efforts. A ribbon cutting ceremony will celebrate the completion of the Main Floodwater Channel Expansion Project, a crucial upgrade aimed at improving stormwater management for the region.

Event Details

When: Thursday, April 2, 2026
Time: 10:00 a.m.
Where: 5818 Brandy St, Monte Alto, TX 78538

This expansion project is a vital investment in enhancing regional flood control infrastructure, significantly increasing stormwater capacity and providing greater protection for the approximately 400,000 residents of Hidalgo County.

Significance of the Project

Dr. Joel Rivera, the director of the Hidalgo County Urban County Program, emphasized the project’s importance, stating, "This project represents years of planning, coordination, and responsible investment in our region’s future." The expanded floodwater channel is designed to alleviate concerns during heavy rainfall, offering a strategic solution that will benefit the community for generations.

Prominent guests from the Office of U.S. Congressman Vicente Gonzalez and the Texas General Land Office (GLO) will be in attendance, highlighting the collaborative efforts behind the project.

Funding and Project Overview

The Main Floodwater Channel Expansion Project is a $20 million initiative that aims to double the capacity of the existing channel, expanding its width from an average of 150 feet to approximately 350-400 feet. This decision came after extensive engineering studies revealed the need for a more efficient stormwater management system, ensuring that the floodwater channel effectively handles runoff during heavy rainfall events.

  • Project Cost: Approximately $3 million per mile
  • Capacity Increase: An additional 2 million cubic yards of stormwater storage
  • Completion Phases:
    • Phase I: Funded by the GLO with $9,858,499.20
    • Phase II: Funded by the GLO with $9,962,444.40
    • Construction Start Date: November 30, 2021

The Texas General Land Office has played an instrumental role in securing funding for this essential project. As Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham stated, "Every recovery dollar we invest in drainage improvements is a step toward a brighter, stronger future for Hidalgo County families."

Impact on the Community

The project is expected to positively affect around 397,800 residents, including 212,783 low-to-moderate income individuals. Improving the floodwater channel’s capacity will significantly enhance flood protection for vulnerable neighborhoods, offering peace of mind during adverse weather conditions.

As flooding in Hidalgo County has historically been linked to the channel reaching capacity, this strategic expansion will ensure that hundreds of regional drainage systems remain operational even during heavy rain, preventing water backup into homes and roads.

Invitation to the Public

All members of the media and the public are invited to this significant event. The ribbon cutting serves not only as a celebration of the completed project but also as a reaffirmation of the commitment to safeguarding the community against future flooding challenges.

Summary

This milestone event marks a pivotal moment in Hidalgo County’s ongoing efforts to enhance flood protection and build resilience against severe weather. The Main Floodwater Channel Expansion Project showcases the collaborative work of various stakeholders aimed at ensuring the safety and wellbeing of the community.

Join us! Your participation in this ribbon cutting ceremony represents a step forward in securing a safer future for Hidalgo County residents.
