Freezing Temperatures Persist in the Rio Grande Valley: What to Expect

As winter grips the Rio Grande Valley, residents are bracing for another night of freezing temperatures. The First Warn 5 Weather Team has reported that temperatures are set to drop significantly overnight, with conditions expected to mirror those of Monday morning.

Current Weather Situation

On Monday morning, temperatures in the Rio Grande Valley plummeted, resulting in readings from the upper 20s to lower 30s Fahrenheit. For those planning their day, temperatures are anticipated to rise above freezing between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. However, the afternoon is expected to offer some relief with plenty of sunshine and highs reaching the upper 40s to lower 50s.

Freeze Warning in Effect

A Freeze Warning remains in effect, starting at 9 p.m. and lasting until 10 a.m. the following day. Residents in the Upper Valley and Mid-Valley should prepare for overnight lows that may dip back into the upper 20s to lower 30s. Those living in the lower/coastal Valley might see temperatures hover just above freezing.

Preparing for Cold Conditions

To mitigate the impact of these cold temperatures, residents are advised to take the following precautions:

  • Insulate pipes to prevent freezing.
  • Allow faucets to drip overnight.
  • Ensure that pets have a warm place to sleep indoors.
  • Dress in layered clothing if venturing outside.

Upcoming Temperatures

The good news is that temperatures are expected to rebound by Tuesday afternoon. Forecasts indicate that residents can look forward to highs in the 60s, signaling the end of the freezing threat for the immediate future.
