DHR Health Unveils New Medical Campus in Starr County, Texas

Bringing Healthcare Closer to Home

In a significant development for rural healthcare in the Rio Grande Valley, DHR Health officials recently unveiled plans for a state-of-the-art medical campus in Starr County. This initiative aims to enhance healthcare accessibility and reduce the necessity for residents to seek medical treatment outside their local area. DHR Health CEO Dr. Manish Singh outlined the campus’s goals, emphasizing the importance of integrating healthcare services to better serve the community.

Addressing Healthcare Needs

The newly planned medical campus is designed to tackle the critical gaps in healthcare services and professionals in the region. According to Dr. Singh, the campus will promote not only primary and specialty healthcare access but also advance clinical research while training the next generation of healthcare providers. The establishment of the first family medicine physician residency graduate medical education program in Starr County is a pivotal component of this initiative.

The project is a result of extensive planning and represents a monumental investment in the healthcare infrastructure of Starr County, marking a transformative shift in the region’s medical landscape.

Funding and Collaboration

Funded by a generous $16.7 million grant from the Texas Department of State Health Services, this medical campus was developed through a collaborative effort involving Starr County, Starr County Memorial Hospital, and Rio Grande City. This partnership exemplifies a commitment to providing comprehensive healthcare services in an area designated as a Medically Underserved Area (MUA) and a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA).

Key Features of the New Campus

The medical campus will include several key facilities designed to address diverse healthcare needs:

  • Medical Laboratory: Spanning 12,375 sq. ft., this facility will provide advanced diagnostic testing and serve as a regional support laboratory.

  • Cardiology and Multi-Specialty Resident Training Clinic: This 11,766 sq. ft. clinic will facilitate training across various specialties.

  • Clinical Research Center: At 12,893 sq. ft., this center will expand access to clinical trials, promoting innovative healthcare solutions.

  • Primary Care Graduate Medical Education Center and Clinic: A substantial 17,526 sq. ft. facility dedicated to training future physicians in fields like family medicine, internal medicine, and psychiatry.

Dr. Singh reassured the community that DHR Health would manage the new campus fully and cover all operational costs, eliminating any ongoing financial burden on local, state, or federal government entities.

Commitment to Community Health

DHR Health’s commitment to expanding access to quality healthcare in Starr County exemplifies a long-term investment in community health. This project seeks not only to enhance essential services but also to advance clinical research and nurture future healthcare professionals.

Impact on Local Economy and Workforce

Completion of the campus is poised to make a significant impact on the health and economic vitality of Starr County and the surrounding areas. It is expected to create new clinical and support jobs while strengthening the regional healthcare workforce, thus benefiting the local community tremendously.

Honoring a Local Physician

During the unveiling event, DHR Health honored Dr. Alberto “Beto” Gutierrez—a long-serving family medicine physician from Rio Grande City—by naming the Family Medicine Clinic after him. Dr. Gutierrez’s dedication to patient care over his 54-year career is celebrated, having compassionately treated over a million patients.

Partnering for Better Health

DHR Health expressed gratitude toward its many partners in this endeavor, including local and federal officials and organizations such as U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar and the Starr County Industrial Foundation. This collaboration emphasizes the importance of community-focused efforts in fostering better health outcomes.

This project marks not just a milestone for healthcare in Starr County, but also a beacon of hope for enhancing the overall quality of life in the region through better access to healthcare services.
