UT Rio Grande Valley Dominates SE Louisiana: A 96-75 Victory

HAMMOND, La. – In an electrifying matchup, the UT Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros emerged victorious against the Southeastern Louisiana Lions with a commanding score of 96-75, showcasing their skill and teamwork. With this win, the Vaqueros improved their record to 16-12 overall and 12-7 within the Southland Conference.

Key Performers Shine

Two players stood out during Saturday’s contest: Filip Brankovic and Koree Cotton, who together contributed 36 points. Filip Brankovic was particularly efficient, shooting an exceptional 6 of 7 from the field, which included 2 of 3 from three-point range, and finished with 4 for 4 from the free-throw line, totaling 18 points. His precision shooting was instrumental in the team’s triumph.

Koree Cotton matched Brankovic’s scoring output, also finishing with 18 points. Cotton displayed his shooting prowess by going 6 of 9 from the field, including an impressive 4 of 6 from beyond the arc. Marvin McGhee III added to the scoreboard with 17 points, contributing with 5 of 11 shooting, notably 5 for 8 from three-point territory. The collective performance of these players underlines the offensive firepower of the Vaqueros as they eye a strong finish to the season.

SE Louisiana’s Efforts

The Lions, led by Isaiah Gaines, fought valiantly but were unable to secure a victory. Gaines finished with a notable 24 points, along with seven rebounds, making him the leading scorer for SE Louisiana. His contributions kept the team competitive, but ultimately it was not enough against the well-rounded attack of the Vaqueros. Additionally, Peter Hemschemeier added 11 points, while Jeremy Elyzee chipped in 10 points, showcasing the Lions’ attempts to keep pace throughout the game.

Dominant First Half

From the outset, the Vaqueros set the tone. They began aggressively and managed to create a significant gap by leading 46-26 at halftime. The turning point came when the Vaqueros went on an impressive 18-2 run, extending their lead from a mere one point to a staggering 17 points. This dominance carried into the second half as they maintained a lead fluctuating just near the 20-point mark for much of the latter period.

Conclusion: A Strong Performance

The victory of UT Rio Grande Valley over SE Louisiana serves as a testament to their capabilities and determination as they continue marching through the season. With standout performances and a strategic gameplay approach, the Vaqueros are positioned favorably as they aim for a strong finish in the Southland Conference.
