STHS GME Consortium: A Beacon of Hope for the Future of Medicine in the Rio Grande Valley

The South Texas Health System (STHS) is actively working to address the critical shortage of physicians in the medically underserved communities of the Rio Grande Valley. With an ambitious vision, STHS launched the STHS Graduate Medical Education (GME) Consortium in 2022, aimed at recruiting, training, and retaining a new generation of physicians. This initiative is crucial for the region, which faces significant healthcare challenges.

Continued Accreditation by ACGME

Earlier this month, STHS’s GME program proudly received re-accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) following an institutional review. This reauthorization confirms that the consortium has met rigorous ACGME requirements, showcasing its commitment to excellence in graduate medical education.

Quotes from Leadership

Dr. Youssef Majed, the Designated Institutional Official for the STHS GME Consortium, emphasized the significance of this milestone: “This continued accreditation reflects the strength of our institutional infrastructure, our commitment to providing the highest level of graduate medical education, and an unwavering dedication to the well-being of our residents.”

Training Opportunities in the STHS GME Consortium

Since its inception, the STHS GME program, in collaboration with Texas A&M University, has welcomed 83 physicians-in-training across various residency programs, including family medicine, internal medicine, and emergency medicine. The consortium is set to introduce its first cohort of general surgery residents in July 2026.

Future Growth Initiatives

With continued ACGME accreditation, the STHS GME Consortium is well-positioned to maintain its existing programs and pursue the introduction of five additional specialized residency and six fellowship programs in the coming years. By 2027, the goal is to train between 150 and 300 medical residents equipped with the skills necessary to serve the communities of the Rio Grande Valley effectively.

Hands-On Clinical Experience

Residents at STHS rotate through various acute care facilities, including STHS McAllen, STHS Edinburg, STHS Children’s, and STHS Heart. This hands-on approach ensures that trainees gain exposure to diverse medical conditions and patient populations.

Mentorship and Community Health

Each resident is matched with experienced faculty members who provide ongoing support and mentorship. Additionally, residents participate in community health initiatives to deepen their understanding of public health and its determinants, particularly in underserved regions.

Commitment to Community

STHS is dedicated to involving the next generation of physicians in meaningful healthcare delivery. Lance Ames, CEO of STHS Edinburg & STHS Children’s, stated: “In addition to providing much-needed healthcare services, these exceptional residents will play an integral role in the innovation and transformation of healthcare across the Ridge.”

Through the STHS GME Consortium, the focus remains on training compassionate healthcare providers who are eager to serve the Rio Grande Valley after completing their residency programs.
