Dr. Jennifer A. Wood: Leading Mental Health Innovations in the VA Texas Valley Coastal Bend

Introduction

On September 11, 2022, Dr. Jennifer A. Wood was appointed as the Chief of Staff for the VA Texas Valley Coastal Bend Health Care System. A South Texas native, Dr. Wood’s journey in mental health has been marked by her dedication to enhancing psychological care and innovative program development.

Dr. Wood earned her PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Mississippi. Her commitment to serving her community led her back to Texas, where she completed an internship and fellowship at the Audie L. Murphy VA Medical Center, part of the South Texas VA Health Care System. This foundational training equipped her with the skills needed to provide specialized care to veterans.

Career Progression

After completing her clinical training, Dr. Wood took on the role of staff psychologist at the Harlingen VA Outpatient Clinic. Her expertise and leadership skills quickly became evident, leading to her appointment as the Associate Chief of Staff for Mental Health at the VA Texas Valley Coastal Bend Health Care System in 2010. In this position, she was responsible for overseeing mental health programming across seven facilities and multiple tele-mental health sites.

She spearheaded the initiation of an APA-approved Psychology Internship program, which has significantly bolstered training opportunities for emerging psychologists. Furthermore, Dr. Wood developed a partnership with the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Medical School to create a Psychiatry Residency program, enriching the educational landscape of mental health care in the region.
