New Medical Research and Education Center Launching in Rio Grande Valley

The University of Houston (UH) has announced a significant collaboration with DHR Health to create a state-of-the-art Medical Research and Education Center in Edinburg, Texas. This initiative aims to address the critical health care needs of the Rio Grande Valley, a region historically under-resourced in medical services.

A Closer Look at the Facility

The upcoming facility, named the Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine and DHR Health Medical Research and Education Center, will be strategically located on the DHR campus. With a substantial $15 million state appropriation backing the project, DHR Health’s CEO, Dr. Manish Singh, emphasizes that this merger of UH’s educational prowess and DHR Health’s practical clinical experiences will broaden opportunities for medical students, residents, and researchers alike.

Addressing Local Health Challenges

The new center is expected to be a significant catalyst for enhancing medical discovery, expanding the health care workforce, and improving health outcomes throughout South Texas. Dr. Singh anticipates that construction will be completed by the end of this year, providing a dedicated space for clinical training initiatives and joint research projects explicitly focused on health issues disproportionately impacting local communities.

Key Takeaways from the Partnership

  1. Expanded Educational Opportunities: This collaboration will not only enhance UH’s reach into the Rio Grande Valley but will also empower the local population by expanding educational and health care opportunities.

  2. Comprehensive Research Center: The facility will serve as a hub for addressing health conditions unique to the Valley, ensuring that medical education and research align closely with community needs.

  3. Strengthening the Health Workforce: By fostering collaborations between UH and DHR Health, this initiative strengthens Texas’s health workforce pipeline, ensuring that future healthcare professionals are well-prepared to serve in areas where they are most needed.

A Legacy of Collaboration

The partnership is an extension of a longstanding relationship between DHR Health and UH, which first saw the launch of the UH College of Pharmacy Rio Grande Valley Pharm.D. Satellite Program in 2017. This initiative has already begun to make vital contributions to clinical pharmacy services and research projects aimed at better health outcomes.

Susan Turley, president of DHR Health, emphasized the importance of this new center, stating, “Partnering with the University of Houston allows us to accelerate our mission of elevating healthcare quality in the Rio Grande Valley.”

Commitment to Health and Education

Renu Khator, UH president, echoed similar sentiments by highlighting the university’s commitment to expanding healthcare access where it is most critically needed. Jonathan A. McCullers, vice president for health affairs at UH, reiterated that the facility would provide dedicated resources for clinical and translational research, fortifying the foundation of medical education in South Texas.

About the University of Houston

The University of Houston is recognized as a Tier One public research institution. With nearly 49,000 students, it engages in strategic industry partnerships to promote world-class faculty and experiential learning opportunities. The establishment of the Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine marks a landmark achievement for the university, enhancing its mission to improve health across Texas.

About DHR Health

Founded in 1997, DHR Health is a renowned hospital system addressing a significant gap in healthcare access within the Rio Grande Valley. With more than 70 facilities, including five hospitals, DHR Health provides a comprehensive array of medical services while maintaining a strong emphasis on medical education and research.

Through this groundbreaking initiative, both the University of Houston and DHR Health are set to make lasting impacts on the quality of healthcare in the Rio Grande Valley and Texas as a whole, striving for a healthier future for all residents.
