McAllen Citizens League Supports Local Food Bank with Generous Donation

In a heartfelt gesture of community support, the McAllen Citizens League recently presented a substantial donation of $1,270 to the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley (RGV). The occasion took place during the League’s monthly meeting on November 19 at Rio Bank, prominently underlining the organization’s commitment to aiding local families in need.

Contribution to Local Families in Need

Omar Rodriguez, the Director of Grants and Government Relations for the RGV Food Bank, graciously accepted the donation on behalf of the organization. Speaking to the League members, he expressed gratitude for their generosity, emphasizing the food bank’s vital role in serving approximately 300,000 residents across four counties in the Rio Grande Valley.

Rodriguez shared the impact of the donation by explaining, “With this $1,270 donation, we will be able to prepare 6,300 meals for the hungry here in the Valley.” The food bank primarily supports low-income families, the elderly, and veterans, all struggling amid economic challenges.

The Role of McAllen Citizens League

The McAllen Citizens League is dedicated to fostering a sense of community and addressing pressing issues that affect residents. As League President Judith Saldivar articulated, "We’re here as neighbors… We chose the Rio Grande Valley Food Bank because so many people are struggling right now, and this is an opportunity for us to help our neighbors." The organization actively supports multiple charities throughout the year, emphasizing its mission to empower the local community.

Insights from Local Heritage

During the meeting, the attendees also engaged in a presentation by Elva Cerda, co-founder and Executive Director of the McAllen Heritage Center. Cerda provided attendees with a historical overview of McAllen and discussed the ongoing developments concerning the museum’s two-story annex building.

She highlighted that the project has successfully raised $600,000 thus far. "Currently, we are in the bidding process," Cerda noted. She anticipated that groundbreaking might begin in 2026, with completion expected by 2027.

This development illustrates the ongoing efforts in the McAllen area to enhance cultural resources and community pride.

Conclusion

The recent donation by the McAllen Citizens League to the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley reflects a strong commitment to supporting local families facing adversity. Through collaborative efforts, community organizations aim to strengthen the fabric of the Rio Grande Valley, ensuring that fewer people go to bed hungry. While the food bank continues its essential services, ongoing projects like the McAllen Heritage Center’s annex will enrich the community’s cultural landscape.
