Investigation Continues in Murder of Prominent Mission Businessman

Key Developments in the Eddy Betancourt Case

As authorities delve deeper into the shooting death of Eddy Betancourt, a well-known businessman and public figure in Mission, Texas, significant updates have emerged regarding the incident and the individuals involved. On December 27, police responded to a 911 call that reported a person lying on the ground in a business located in the 800 block of North Ware Road, only to discover that Betancourt had succumbed to injuries from a gunshot wound.

Involved Parties: The Main Suspects

Reynaldo Mata-Rios, 60, has been identified as the primary suspect in Betancourt’s murder. Following the incident, McAllen police launched an investigation that led them to issue a warrant for Mata-Rios’s arrest. He is described as 6 feet tall, weighing 195 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. His last known address is in Pharr, Texas.

In addition to Mata-Rios, authorities are pursuing Leonel Perez Delgado, 61, who allegedly assisted in facilitating Mata-Rios’s escape out of the country, thereby hindering law enforcement efforts. Delgado, who is 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighs 225 pounds, also resides in Pharr. Police believe he was the driver of a red truck spotted transporting Mata-Rios through an unidentified U.S.-Mexico port of entry on December 28, the day following Betancourt’s murder.

Background on Eddy Betancourt

Eddy Betancourt, aged 61 at the time of his death, was a significant figure in the community, holding the position of vice chair on the Hidalgo County Appraisal District Board of Directors. He was also appointed by Governor Greg Abbott to the Texas Facilities Commission. Betancourt was the president of R&B General Construction Co. Inc., located just blocks away from where the shooting took place.

Eyewitness Accounts and Police Findings

According to reports by the McAllen Police Department, responding officers arrived at the scene shortly after 3:51 p.m. on December 27, where they confirmed that Betancourt was unresponsive and had no pulse, appearing to have sustained a critical gunshot wound. The details surrounding the motive for the shooting remain unclear, but the police are keeping the community informed as the investigation unfolds.

How to Help

Authorities are urging anyone who may have information regarding this case to come forward. Tips can be crucial in resolving the ongoing investigation into the murder of Eddy Betancourt. Community members are encouraged to contact the McAllen Police Department at (956) 681-2000. Additionally, tips can be submitted anonymously through the McAllen Crime Stoppers hotline at (956) 687-8477 or via the P3 Tips app.
