SFA Dominates UT Rio Grande Valley in Southland Conference Opener

In an impressive showcase, the Stephen F. Austin University (SFA) Lumberjacks triumphed over the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros with a final score of 73-60 in their Southland Conference opener held in Huntsville, Texas. This victory marks an important start for SFA in the conference, as they improve their overall record to 6-2 and 1-0 in conference play.

Key Players Shine for SFA

Narit Chotikavanic’s Stellar Performance

Narit Chotikavanic led the Lumberjacks with a pivotal performance, contributing 13 points. Chotikavanic demonstrated his shooting prowess by sinking 3 of 6 shots from the field, with an impressive 3 of 5 from beyond the arc. Additionally, he secured 4 of 6 at the free-throw line, displaying a well-rounded offensive game that was essential for SFA’s success.

Supporting Contributions

Other players stepped up in crucial moments. Lateef Patrick contributed 12 points, although he faced challenges shooting (only 4 of 17 from the floor and 0 of 7 from three-point range). However, he added valuable rebounds, pulling down six boards to support the team’s efforts. Meanwhile, Chrishawn Christmas rounded out the scoring with 11 points, making 4 of 7 field goal attempts and completing a perfect 3 of 3 at the free-throw line.

UTRGV’s Struggles and Highlights

Despite the loss, UTRGV had standout efforts from their players. Jaylen Washington was the leading scorer for the Vaqueros, posting 15 points along with seven rebounds. His efforts were not enough to secure a victory, but they kept UTRGV competitive throughout the match. Koree Cotton added 11 points, showcasing his abilities under the basket with eight rebounds and two blocks. Julien Gomez also contributed with eight points.

Upcoming Matches

Looking ahead, both teams are scheduled to play again on Sunday. SFA will host UL Monroe, while UTRGV will welcome Austin Peay to their home court. Both teams are eager to build on their performances as they seek to improve their standings for the rest of the conference season.

Conclusion

As the season progresses, the SFA Lumberjacks are aiming to maintain their momentum in the Southland Conference. With performances like Narit Chotikavanic’s, they appear poised to be strong contenders. On the other hand, UTRGV will need to regroup and address its shooting challenges to turn its fortunes around.
