UTRGV Football: Empty Seats Despite Sold-Out Games

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros football games have recently sparked discussions regarding the number of unoccupied seats at Robert and Janet Vackar Stadium, despite claims from the university that each home game has been sold out. This discrepancy has raised questions within the community, leading to remarks from UTRGV’s athletic director.

Stadium Attendance and Community Concerns

While UTRGV asserts that every home game has been a sellout, many spectators have observed that there seem to be empty seats during the matches. This has prompted local fans to inquire: If the games are sold out, why are there visible empty seats?

Chasse Conque, UTRGV’s Senior Vice President and Director of Athletics, acknowledged these concerns. He explained that many season ticket holders may not be able to attend every game. "We’ve had three home games in four weeks, which can be a lot for fans to attend regularly," Conque said.

Encouraging Season Ticket Holders

In an effort to maximize attendance and engagement at games, Conque encouraged season ticket holders who can’t attend to consider giving their tickets to friends or selling them. "Those are things that are important," he noted. This approach not only helps fill the stands but also fosters a stronger sense of community among fans.

Reasons for Empty Seats

Aside from unoccupied tickets, there are additional reasons for the visual perception of empty seats during games. Conque pointed out that many attendees may periodically leave their seats to walk around, grab food, or use the restroom. These movements can create the illusion of empty seats, despite the sold-out status of the event.

Secondary Market Insights

Further insight into the attendance situation comes from the tracking of ticket sales on secondary markets. UTRGV officials reported that less than a hundred tickets were sold through these platforms, which is relatively low and suggests that the majority of ticket holders are indeed fans who intended to attend.

Conclusion

While the sight of empty seats at UTRGV football games may be puzzling, the university remains committed to community engagement. With continuous efforts to encourage fan participation and clarity about the nature of attendance, UTRGV aims to foster a vibrant football culture.
