UTRGV’s Inaugural Give Back Day: A Community Effort to Combat Hunger

Making a Difference in the Rio Grande Valley

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) recently launched its inaugural Give Back Day event at the Robert & Janet Vackar Stadium, marking a significant step towards tackling hunger in the Rio Grande Valley. This initiative was a collaboration between UTRGV’s Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, Driscoll Health Plan, Driscoll Children’s Hospital Rio Grande Valley, and the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley.

Food Distribution for Families in Need

On this impactful day, approximately 150 student-athletes from UTRGV’s football, men’s basketball, and men’s soccer teams came together to directly support their community. They distributed a remarkable 23,100 pounds of food, comprising 1,050 bags for families facing food insecurity. Each bag contained 22 pounds of essential food items, providing much-needed relief to local families.

Promoting Healthy Eating Habits

In addition to food distribution, the event placed a strong emphasis on promoting wellness and healthy eating. Volunteers provided families with easy-to-follow recipes and vital resources to ensure that they could make informed, nutritious choices while staying within budget. This aspect of the initiative aligns with the mission of Driscoll Health Plan, which strives to enhance community health and provide support for families, ensuring that children can thrive.

About Driscoll Health Plan

Driscoll Health Plan has been a vital healthcare provider for children in South Texas since 1953. As a nonprofit organization, Driscoll is committed to delivering quality healthcare to communities across the Lone Star State. It operates the region’s only two freestanding designated children’s hospitals: Driscoll Children’s Hospital in Corpus Christi and Driscoll Children’s Hospital Rio Grande Valley. With a focus on community-based resources, Driscoll Health Plan offers local families access to essential medical care, supporting the health and well-being of children in the area.

Conclusion

UTRGV’s Give Back Day exemplifies the power of community collaboration to confront pressing social issues like hunger. By engaging student-athletes and local organizations, this event not only provided immediate relief to families in need but also fostered a culture of healthy living and community support. The initiatives undertaken highlight the importance of working together to enhance the quality of life for those in the Rio Grande Valley.
